Computer Virus Question - think I have something

First thing, I basically only go on a few sites ...
ebay
yahoo (my home page)
wikipedia
youtube
Mego Museum

That's about it.

anyway,
a few days ago my Outlook Express started running extra slow.
My Outlook basically don't get any spam emails --and hardly any from my buds (this is normal)
But for the last few days it runs crazy slow.

I use AVG free anti virus

So a few days ago AVG pops up a threat ---
They call it "Trojan horse Generic 18.CJW.dropper"
They put it in my "virus vault" and I delete it.
It's then gone ....

But, the next day it's back.
Same thing, Outlook Express runs slow etc ...

It say's it's path was Temp Internet Files ....
I delete all these everytime, but it still comes back.

I run my full virus scan every night but it never finds anything.

Spybot doesn't find anything either.

Anyone know how to get rid of this thing for good ?

If it keep coming back, it in your registry...probably in the start up files, or in your system restore files.

Before messing with your registry, try resetting your system restore (after deleting the infected file but before rebooting) then reboot. Then create a new restore point.

If it STILL detects the virus after THAT... well, it's time to registry hunt.

It's in the system restore files.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

4. Create a New Restore Point
Click on start,
Click on All Programs>accesories>system tools>system restore
click on Create a restore point

Is the virus still being detected?

I didn't try it yet but I will.

Before I do, here's a little more information.

I ran AVG twice in one day ... It didn't find anything ... then hours after the AVG finished I get an AVG pop-up telling me about the trojan.

It seems like AVG don't find it on normals scans --- but it finds it for no reason when i'm not scanning.

Yahoo is my homepage ....
If I shut off all windows and try to get on my homepage (yahoo) it takes a good 4-5 minutes to load in.
I used to take about 30 seconds

Also, it seems when i'm on my yahoo is when the AGV pop-up comes up telling me about the trojan.

Does any of this help ?

download Lavasoft's AD AWARE free version, and Spybot searck and destroy, I use both of the free versions, run them every few days, and keep them updated. I have not had a problem like the one you are describing in months!

I think AVG sucks. I used to use it. Now I use Avast! And I use Firefox and not internet explorer. Much better in my opinion.

you need to run both of these wonderful maleware/spy apps. Both do a really good job and also take down rootkits if present as well as registry detect

superantispyware (one word)

and

malwarebytes

both are free. Run them and see if they pick up anything. I had something a long time ago and it was only from a combo of these two that I was even able to start taking my pc back

I still have spybot on here as well ,but adaware got rid of the free version and the two I mentioned above blow it out of the water anyway

one post mentioned that for you to uncheck your restore points. Take note that in doing so will erase them. So for whatever reason if you do have to go back you will be screwed

I agree with both of these (and I also use some nice Firefox add-ons like No Script and Ad Block Plus). I used to use AVG but someone recommended Avast instead and I do think it's better.

Try booting your PC into safe mode. To get into the Windows 2000 / XP Safe mode, as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

Then in safe mode run your AVG scan.

I also ran into a issue with my in laws PC where a virus had attacked Internet explorer and had it set to only go to certain fake web pages. YOu may have a simular problem and are gettiing re infected when you go online. If you are using IE please consider changing to Firefox, its much safer and more virus resistant.

I called in 2 of my nephews ... both are computer geeks.
They couldn't figure out what the problem was.
Both were stumped.
In the end one of my nephews wound up giving me his spare computer he rebuilt.
That's what I use now.

I didn't contact them about this latest problem because they're both too busy in their jobs and I didn't wanna bug them -- if I didn't need to.

Can someone tell me how to change my homepage ?

I went to internet options and then general .....

It currently has yahoo as my homepage.

The problem is the word yahoo and the buttons are written in ghost manner (meaning I can't change them)

On the bottom it says "some settings are managed by your system manager"

My old computer never had that.
