Magic Garden with Paula and Carole DVD review

So the thread about live action 70's morning shows got me fired up enough to track down the Magic Garden DVD, and though admittedly, it was kinda rough sitting through the entire thing, I'm really glad I did.

It's pretty fantastic. Talk about bringing you back. This is WAY back... Again, like most things we dug from the seventies, it's very simple but very effective. Watching the episodes and listening to the songs, it's easy to see why so many little kids were into this. Adult viewings are entirely another matter, but for nostalgic reasons, I'd have to say I was digging it. I even actually remembered a lot of the chuckle patch jokes, and the songs, but believe me when I tell you that on this 2 disc set (that also includes a CD of some songs) there will be things that you didn't remember. Or, at least I didn't.

What I found particularly interesting, were the Sherlock and Flapper characters... I think they were both male, but watching some of their interaction as an adult was shall I say-- Intriguing.

Overall, it was worth it. The two negatives I'd have to say were the CD and the "Interview" with Paula and Carole on the "bonus features". The CD only has 5 songs on it and the two most popular songs, the hello song and the goodbye song, aren't on it. The interview is literally 3 minutes long, and has two tiny clips of each of them talking for like 10 seconds. I kid you not... The rest of it is just clips from the show. Why that's even on there, is a complete mystery to me.

I'm a total sucker for anything 70's, so I'm still humming and whistling the songs, and feeling pretty groovy about the whole thing... "See ya, C ya-- Hope you have a shiny day-- Goodbye!"

I absolutely Loved this show as a kid and it always brings me fond memories. Very simple and effective. Loved Sherlock. WPIX I think still gave the show way into the late 80's although they were repeats.....

I think it was regional mostly in the NY, NJ, Conn and PA area -- coming out of New York City.

I remember it well but was a little too old to enjoy it ... I was already 7 when it premiered in 1972

My wife grew up on this show, how the Hello and Goodbye songs did not make the cut are a serious mistake as they were the staple in a sense.

I think I will surprise her.....

You know I totally dug the Magic Garden. I remember it used to come on at 10am, then moved to the afternoons at 2pm along w/ Joya's Fun School and The New Zoo Revue. I have a 2 video set, a Christmas ep, and Magic Garden Still Growing that someone recorded for me. And being a teacher, I can appreciate these eps and songs. My fave was always Carole, but I used to get out my toy guitar so I could pretend to play the songs w/ Paula. They have a website, and still tour the East Coast. And they're only too happy to answer e-mail. Carole sent me a couple. Anyway, this was a pretty imaginative show, on a low budget (Sherlock started out as a pink rug!) that kept many kids, myself included, entertained and educated for many years. I can still remember being sad when the windows closed!

Anyway, here's the Open Window song:

            The Opening Theme:

            The Storybox song:

            And the See Ya song:

If your wanna relive more memories, there's LOTS of footage on YouTube, including their live performances! Long Live the 70s!
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

I've had this in my Amazon cart for quite a while but haven't pulled the trigger....I'm afraid my childhood memories won't live up to my adult expectations. Same with New Zoo Revue, in the cart but haven't bought. (Although I am dying to see Emmy Jo in her go-go boots again )
