I Hear That Song And I'm 8 And Its Summmer

The unofficial start of summer here in the U.S. and its nice and warm here in NYC. I heard an old Bill Withers song and it just took me back.

What songs sneak up on you and just take you back to that potent mix of childhood and summer that equals nothing but carefree!

I'm not talking about that Led Zeppelin or Eagles album you've been listening to since 1977. I mean something that has a real connection to your childhood summers BECAUSE it didn't come with you.

My mom always had Lite FM on the radio when I was a kid. I can clearly remember the feeling of the wind coming into our station wagon and this playing on the radio-

    In the Summertime.

I haven't heard if for quite a while and then they played it on the radio the other day ...

Made me start thinking about me and my buddy building our fort in the sweltering humid heat in the woods

Well, I hear this one and I'm 5. When I was little my family used to drive to upstate NY to this retreat place my dad's job own called Camp Henry/ Echo Hill. I had 2 pools, a really great wooded area, and my dad's boss had horses up there. I swear every time I smell chlorine from a pool and it's really warm, I long to hear AM rock on the radio and be at Echo Hill:

Great songs and nice clips, all!!

This song always takes me back to riding in the back of a VW Super Beetle. It was on the radio as we (my parents) were going down the road:

10cc's "The Things We Do For Love"

There was a terrible song called something like "Bertha Butt Boogie" that came out in the early to mid 1970s. I remember hearing it on the radio traveling to Gatlinburg, Tenn. for a vacation and to visit relatives. I was warned not to sing the song around my great aunt and uncle but my brother goaded me into doing it anyway. As punishment, my parents took away my Davy Crockett cap they had bought me for the rest of the trip.

I don't think I can directly draw a parallel to Summertime, but taking me back, waaay back is Pac-Man Fever. I wore that album out. I can almost hear the Frogger song in my head too. Yeah, insane.

"Afternoon Delight"- my parents would always shut it off, and we never understood why...

There are a few for me...One is definitely Wings "With A Little Luck". Reminds me of going into Brooklyn every other weekend to see aunts and uncles. The 2 others I think that bring me back are Barry Manilow's "Can't Smile Without You" and Leo Sayer's "More Than I Can Say"...I laugh everytime I hear them because I remember my Dad singing this to my mother...in a Heavy Italian Accent
"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
                        The beauty that surrounds them
                        Isn't it a pity".

Believe it or not, anything from "License to Ill" by the Beastie Boys. I was more like 9 or 10, but any of the singles reminds me of sitting in my friend's yard, listening to the call-in dedication hour and a) trying to get through and request a song for our crushes and b)hoping someone dedicated one to you.

Anything by Karen Carpenter, Elvis, or the Platters. My mom played these records on the turntable and I remember them as if I were listening to them right now....
