I don't know if it's just me but the World Cup has definitely garnered more interest in the USA than I can ever remember. Maybe it is because the USA actually has a half decent team or it is now the most popular youth sport around.

During the last World Cup, one would have to turn to the back pages of the Sports section to even look at the results (and they would never even bother mentioning the U.S. on the news).

Now it is front page, even if it isn't USA. Now that we're out, I'm routing for Holland all the way. It would be nice to see someone besides Brazil, Argentina, or Germany win it and besides Spain, I think Holland is really the only other team left with a real shot.

Not discounting Uruguay, Paraguay, or Ghana...they all have had a great run but I will be shocked if any of them can beat any of the other 5 teams in the knockout phase barring one of the teams being riddled with injuries or red cards.

The Cup has definitely garnered more attention this time around and it does have a lot to do with the US having a decent team. The success in the Confederations Cup raised expectations amongst those who cover sports.

I do think it is also a reflection of soccer slowly becoming more popular. Its not the avalanche that soem try and protray it as, but it is happening. I mentioned earlier of having no one to call and celebrate with when the US beat Columbia in '94. Now I have to get to my favorite pub almost 2 hours before a match to make sure I get a good seat! Its a shame the US team couldn't go further and help give a little more of a boost.

BTW, I still wonder about Germany's defense comapred to Argentina's. It should be a good match and I think whoever scores first will have a big advantage. I'd love to see an early goal really open up the counter attacks of both teams.

Brazil shot themselves in the foot. In the first half they played great football, lots of short accurate passes and stylish back heels, Holland looked second best then they go 1-1 to a fluke goal and lose their heads. The right back makes a silly foul, send off and Holland are right back in it. I fully expect Holland to beat either Uraguay or Ghana to make the final at the very least against either Spain or Argentina.

But I have such little faith in Ghana's keeper. He seems so inconsistent, you never know when he might make a costly mistake.

WOW, some ending in the Ghana-Uruguay game. Gyan misses a PK at the end of ET, which Uruguay won 4-2 in PK. That's some blow to lose like that.
