If they're not over the cap they can still take on a max contract even if it brings them over. They'll just have to pay the "luxury tax" fee for whatever amount they go over. The only stipulation I believe exists in the NBA is you can't take an additional max contract if your already over the cap. It's kind of a "Yankees" clause so teams don't just keep spending. Once your over you can't bring in any more top players even if you can pay more in LT fees. It's kind of like a cap on the cap.

yeah if they go over they have to pay what ever amount they went over, so it's pretty much like paying double if you're close to the cap. Not many teams would do that, but I could see someone doing it for James, he'll triple that money back for them

I hope he comes to New York! We need him the most, NY is a basketball town, the Garden is almost full even when we have a sub-par team. If we had James the Garden would be sold out all season!
