It's actually a little deeper than that but I don't want to dredge up Canadian politics here so; if you are really interested just look up the "1995 referendum".
Basically there was a vote plain and simple a ballet with yes/oui or no/non to separate and after a hard fought battle it was; "No" by a narrow majority of 50.56%.

We are now just one big happy country...
“When you say “It’s hard”, it actually means “I’m not strong enough to fight for it”. Stop saying its hard. Think positive!”

I actually don't even know if the French dubbing is French Canadian dialect or not. I assumed it was French as spoken in France, but now that I think about it that doesn't make any sense - Does anyone know?

I'm not trying to be political about the packaging at all, by the way. It's not the French that annoys me it's the lousy job of cramming it in that bugs me. Some companies make the DVD sleeve flippable so retailers can display French packaging - obviously that's a lot more expensive.

Yep, there are a bunch of Canadian exclusives (or Canadian releases with better features) on DVD and Blu-ray (for which we are also the same region as the US, region A in this case)

Region 8 is for airlines and cruiseships, I've always been curious to see if whatever DVDs used for inflight/onboard entertainment are actually notated as Region 8. I do know that sometimes airlines show movies before their official DVD release, so I can understand the need for region coding protection for them (not that region coding is that difficult to get around). And I've been wondering for the past 13 years what Region 7 is being "reserved" for.
