    Back up vocals

One of the things I think that makes a band successful is for the musicians who do not sing lead to be able to harmonize and sing backup on songs. In my humble opinion some of the best are:
    The Edge- U2
Bass player from Van Halen, not Eddie's kid.
George Harrison- A good example of this is the song all my loving. Great voice on George.
All of the members of Queen
Keith Richards-Rolling Stones. Saw an early live performance of 19th nervous breakdown and wow, he sings very well!

Any more you can think of?

Backing vocals are a great thing to have in a band "arsenal".

So many bands come to mind...but I'll mention
THE VIOLENT FEMMES and THE PRESIDENTS OF THE USA and THE CARS.
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix

Bad Religion is the first one that comes to mind. And not only do they harmonize well, they are also amazingly precise musicians.

I always liked then George and Paul McCartney harmonized.. the backing vocals for 'Help!' comes to mind... "It's like BUTTA.."

And, yes, on 'Lets Spend the Night Together', '2000 Light Years from Home', 'Get Off My Cloud', 'Jack Flash', plenty of other Stones songs, Keith had great harmonies.

            I'd say Keith sings "appropriately."

IMHO...best harmonies ever...Crosby, Stills, and Nash...and the occasional Young.

There was a CD out a while back by a group called the Thorns. Basically it was Mathew Sweet, Pete Droge and Shawn Mullins. Amazing Vocals and Harmonies that reminded me a lot of CSN & Y. Recommended CD if you can get it.

And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
              The beauty that surrounds them
              Isn't it a pity".
