Question about radio, tv and film

Hey everybody of Jim;s unofficial marketing focus group! the reason I say that is obvious, I always pitch some questions to you guys and gals that I know when I do I will get an answer that is a real slice of perspective versus a traditional "poll" Anyway if you would be so kind...

    1. Do you watch broadcast TV in your area and where are you located?

    2. Do you listen to traditional broadcast radio? When and Where?

    3. Do you still go to the movie theater regularly or wait for the DVD? Why?

    4. Do you have cable, satellite or rabbit ears?

    5. Where do you get the majority of your entertainment/ information from (i.e. radio, T.V, printed publications, the internet, CD, DVD etc...)?

    6. What do you think is the current state of and future for traditional broadcasting?

I know these may seem tedious but I'm very interested and concerned about your answers. Working in small market broadcast television (and in broadcasting in some form or another for twenty years) I must say that I am worried about my chosen livelihood. Not that the results of this poll is a major factor in the rest of my career or something over dramatic like that, I'm just curious if my feelings and observations are unique to me or if others share some of the same views.

Anyway thanks to any and all who chime in on this one. I appreciate it.

    1. Do you watch broadcast TV in your area and where are you located?
North East PA ... I watch mostly standard cable -- History Channel etc.
On weekends sometimes I watch PBS when they play oldies music shows.

    2. Do you listen to traditional broadcast radio? When and Where?
Not really ... sometimes a local 70's station

    3. Do you still go to the movie theater regularly or wait for the DVD? Why?
No movie theatre's anymore ... too expensive and too much trouble

    4. Do you have cable, satellite or rabbit ears?
    Cable (sometimes)

    5. Where do you get the majority of your entertainment/ information from (i.e. radio, T.V, printed publications, the internet, CD, DVD etc...)?
    DVD's and internet.

    6. What do you think is the current state of and future for traditional broadcasting?
TV is getting worse as the years go by.
It's in sorry state considering I only watch reruns of old shows.

      1. Do you watch broadcast TV in your area and where are you located?

      No, Seattle

      2. Do you listen to traditional broadcast radio? When and Where?

Rarely. Road trips and in car.

      3. Do you still go to the movie theater regularly or wait for the DVD? Why?

Theater only for IMAX and old movies. DVD for new movies unless for kids to take my daughter. Why? Convenience and comfort. Unless old movies to be around appreciative fans.

      4. Do you have cable, satellite or rabbit ears?

      None.

      5. Where do you get the majority of your entertainment/ information from (i.e. radio, T.V, printed publications, the internet, CD, DVD etc...)?

      Internet and rarely newspaper.

      6. What do you think is the current state of and future for traditional broadcasting?

Current state that it is working on old paradigm of ad based funding and will fall by the way side and make way for on demand custom once older gen passes and younger gen takes over. No more free broadcasting. Some groups will own parts and charge. Just like the internet (meant to be free but you have to pay for it.)

        1. Do you watch broadcast TV in your area and where are you located?
Yes, absolutely. I'm in Ridgeway Ontario, so I pick up signals mostly from Buffalo, NY, but also from Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario

        2. Do you listen to traditional broadcast radio? When and Where?
Yes. Usually all day at work, and sometimes in the car.

        3. Do you still go to the movie theater regularly or wait for the DVD? Why?
Very rarely these days. I usually wait for the Blu-ray release, and then I can watch a high quality version of the film in the comfort of my own home, on a fairly big screen, without the distractions of rude fellow movie-goers, which has gotten steadily worse over the years. The only exceptions are film festival screenings or indie/foreign films, where there is a much better chance that everyone there is a film lover who is actually there to quietly watch the movie.

        4. Do you have cable, satellite or rabbit ears?
No satellite and we recently got rid of cable, just got a big OTA antenna on the roof. We get all our TV shows from over the air HD signals, Blu-ray/DVD, and from the internet. Between that, I have more stuff to watch than I'll ever need.

        5. Where do you get the majority of your entertainment/ information from (i.e. radio, T.V, printed publications, the internet, CD, DVD etc...)?
Majority from DVD and internet, but some from the other sources mentioned too.

        6. What do you think is the current state of and future for traditional broadcasting?
Traditional television broadcasters in Canada are really hurting right now, and are in a very precarious financial situation which is why they are currently trying to work out a deal to have cable and satellite companies pay fees to carry their stations (which of course, the cable and sat companies are trying to fight, but it looks like the government will force them too). The future doesn't really look great, with continually decreasing advertising revenue, and steadily increasing use of the internet for TV, and other entertainment, broadcast TV definitely will have some hurtles to overcome.

Just to clarify, #5 mentions "entertainment/information", does that mean "entertainment AND information" or "information about entertainment"? I was assuming the former, and answered as such.

              1. Do you watch broadcast TV in your area and where are you located?

Yes I watch broadcast TV. I live near Tampa/St. Pete

              2. Do you listen to traditional broadcast radio? When and Where?

I work out of a van with no CD player, so even though Florida radio is horrible I still listen daily.

              3. Do you still go to the movie theater regularly or wait for the DVD? Why?

I love going to the movies, if there were something worth watching every weekend I'd try and go.

              4. Do you have cable, satellite or rabbit ears?

              Cable

              5. Where do you get the majority of your entertainment/ information from (i.e. radio, T.V, printed publications, the internet, CD, DVD etc...)?

TV, newspaper several days a week but no subscription, a few motorcycle magazines, the Internet for fun stuff, but never for news other than weather.

              6. What do you think is the current state of and future for traditional broadcasting?

There doesn't seem to be any shortage of commercials on television, though I did hear that the SuperBowl didn't bring in as much on ads as usual. Pay channels like HBO haven't brought anything impressive lately, but I'd argue for hours that The Wire was the best series ever to be on television, and that kind of show could never happen on regular broadcast TV.

                    1. Do you watch broadcast TV in your area and where are you located?

Almost Never. Cable only for the most part.

                    2. Do you listen to traditional broadcast radio? When and Where?

Only when I'm in the car and mostly just sports or news, for music I carry an MP3 that plugs in and plays on my car stereo.

                    3. Do you still go to the movie theater regularly or wait for the DVD? Why?

Both of the major movie theatres in my area run $5 movie nights Mon-Thurs. We enjoy em on the big screen so we go whenever we have the time.

                    4. Do you have cable, satellite or rabbit ears?

                    Cable

                    5. Where do you get the majority of your entertainment/ information from (i.e. radio, T.V, printed publications, the internet, CD, DVD etc...)?

                    Internet

                    6. What do you think is the current state of and future for traditional broadcasting?

If it wasn't for the car or sports I'd never listen to an actual radio broadcast. I guess since there will always be people commuting or working outside, etc radio will survive.
There has already been discussions about local channels giving their programs to the cable and then they charge their customers to watch them while the actual channels make nothing. They want to start charging the cable carriers for their programming. Comcast has already said if the local channels charge them for their programming they will kick the charge right back at the customers. I can't see myself paying for the local channels for what they offer. I think it would kill the local stations unless they expanded what they offer and made it better.
It's not a doll it's an action figure.

                      1. Do you watch broadcast TV in your area and where are you located?

As in local stuff? Not really. Though there isn't a lot of local programming aside from the news left. I don't watch the local news.

                      2. Do you listen to traditional broadcast radio? When and Where?

Yes, all the time in the car.

                      3. Do you still go to the movie theater regularly or wait for the DVD? Why?

I go to the theatre uh, over a dozen times a year. If a lot of good movies are coming out, even moreso. I like the theatre experiance. I rarely buy DVDs, mostly rent, unless it's something good. And by rent I mean Netflix.

                      4. Do you have cable, satellite or rabbit ears?

                      Satellite. DirecTV pwns all cable.

                      5. Where do you get the majority of your entertainment/ information from (i.e. radio, T.V, printed publications, the internet, CD, DVD etc...)?

                      Internet, TV a distant second.

                      6. What do you think is the current state of and future for traditional broadcasting?

It's all headed digital. Don't let anyone fool you otherwise. Technology will win, it always wins. I stream Netflix through my Xbox... Completely changed the way I watch TV. I'd say 60% if not higher of my shows and movies I watched last year came from this.

                      The rest is all DVRed.

I haven't watched a program with commercials in literally probably a few years. I might watch 5 or 10 mins here or there if I'm just flipping channels, but I DVR or Netflix everything.

                              1. Do you watch broadcast TV in your area and where are you located?
                              No. I watch cable.

                              2. Do you listen to traditional broadcast radio? When and Where?
Sometimes in the car, but not really.

                              3. Do you still go to the movie theater regularly or wait for the DVD? Why?
I go to the movies when I really want to see something that's a 'big screen' experience, and if I can get a babysitter.

                              4. Do you have cable, satellite or rabbit ears?
                              Cable.

                              5. Where do you get the majority of your entertainment/ information from (i.e. radio, T.V, printed publications, the internet, CD, DVD etc...)?
                              Cable TV, DVDs & Internet

                              6. What do you think is the current state of and future for traditional broadcasting?
I don't know about such things.

Hope this helps in some small way.
