    Speaking of Halloween...

Who remembers when getting ready for Halloween meant going to Woolworth's or your local 5 and dime?

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=Khjr-MlLde0

Man, I miss going to Woolworth and seeing costumes of every conceivable thing you could want to be! Spooks, superheroes, TV personalities, comic book and cartoon characters, movie heroes, just everything, and all it took was a mask and a piece of plastic.

And who had some of those scary records? I had one of Famous Ghost Stories. Here's a cool site w/ some records you might have had.

Ben Franklin's had the best costume selection. All the Ben Cooper Super Heroes and TV characters in those great boxes chockful of comic art. I remember the Steve Ditko Spider-Man, the Infantino Batman...sigh. They also had the best Halloween decorations. I still see some of the vintage ones out in store today. That one set that has the flaming skull that looks kind of like Ghost Rider!

Our local Wal-Mart Halloween section this year is horrible. 10,000 Spider-man costumes, and that's about it.

Yep a trip to the 5 and dime to get our costume. The biggest challenge was to keep the rubber band on your mask from breaking before Halloween.

Think B.A. Where did you hide the Megos?

Yep, and to keep the vinyl mask from splitting and cutting your nose, chin, tongue or lips.

My birthday always hit right when the Halloween stuff came out, and my Aunt worked at a Danners five and dime. I was always invited into the store and was given $5 to spend. Aside from an occasional Mego (I remember getting Hulk there) I usually spent my money on Halloween stuff. I can remember getting my vinyl Ben Cooper Superman, Evel Kenievel, and skeleton costumes there and virtually every year I got some new fangs and fake blood.

This year we're making both our kid's costumes. my daughter will be a pirate and the working plan for my son is Tetrax the Petrosapian from Ben 10.

          Fun stuff

I love those Ben Cooper costumes and had many of them growing up....wish my mom had kept them.

Along with the other memories as all have mentioned, I remember the plastic mask would get so hot that it would be up on top of your head about 1/4 of the way through the night.

I cut the face out of my Evel Keneivel mask so my face showed through the helmet.

Remember cheap masks? Try and buy your kid a cheap plastic mask. They no longer exist.

Always got my costume at Howard Brothers. I always had to break it in the night before and by the time Halloween came I usually had a few rips in the costume from playing in it.

Superunderdoggie (Dan) surprised me with a Ben Cooper Batman costume after I mentioned how cool I thought they were.

                  I'm wearing it now.

With a few exceptions we always assembled our own costumes out of old clothes that we customized. Even back then I thought the costumes being sold in the seventies were bad.

Today's kids can actually buy a spiderman costume that looks like Spider-man, lasts more than one wear, and doesn't hurt or blind you.

Agreed. The store bought costumes from our youth are only great as memories. They were terrible costumes, and I was always underwehlmed everytime I put one on. Superman's flight should have sounded like the TV show "SSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" Not the "SHHLLP, SHHLLP, SHHLLP" made with each vinyl covered step.
