Another piece of my childhood gone..

I was in utter shock today when I went to pick my up my weekly comics and found my local shop had suddenly closed up. All the shelves were still there but the lights were out and everything was bare. They changed locations a few times over the years but it always felt the same. Not only had I be going to this store since I was a kid it had actually been in existence since 1976.
It was a small but cool store. There are other shops this really blows.
It was so abrupt too, it doesn't even say anything on their website. I guess they've been struggling since they used to be in a mall and don't have that foot traffic anymore.

Yeah, Collectible Corner across from the comic shop I go to closed up recently too b/c they aren't getting the customers anymore.

The one I go to was around since the 70's. The owner sold it a few years ago, but the guys who picked it up kept it the same. That's a rarity these days.
        It's all good!

That's too bad. I feel your pain.

I haven't collected comics in 25 years, but I was still sad when my hole in the wall comics shop closed about 10 or 12 years ago. Lots of memories..

Kind of hard for physical stores to compete (has been for years) with online sales and pirated books.

I get my comics at 35% off cover price for all titles, and 50% off at times for a few select books, each month. And they are all delivered to my door once a month for $5.99 no matter the package weight (gallon & 1/2 gas saved too), from an online comic business.

Totally beats going to the comic shop and paying $3/$4 per book.

You definitely get comfortable going to the same shop over a period of years. I have a nice shop locally in my town, that I have probably been going to for 18 years or so. If it went out of business, I assume I would never even pick up an occasional comic anymore. The comfort factor and ease of access makes me still enjoy visiting it every once in a while.

Sorry to hear that. Ebay, Video Games, and bookstores as well as the economy have really hurt small Comic Shops.

We have one close by that I took my kids too when they were younger. My son is now 18 and my daughter 13. That was a magical time that I dearly miss.

Nothing sadder than seeing a closed down comic shop. My condolences on losing your childhood haunt but wow, 34 years is a long time to have one.
