Deep sea beasties can get really big, like giant squid.

There are trilobite creatures in the fossil records like that (I've seen them on on of the bbc walking with Monasters Life before the Dinosaurs special) so it isn't impoassible that some exist in deep water.

That's really not that big. It looks like a streamlined horshoe crab. We get those coming right out of the water at 2 feet+ if you count the tail around here. You'll see em sitting on the edge of the water right on the beach.
We have spider crabs too but the cold water stops em from ever getting that big. 2-3 feet would not be surprising. We pull em up all the time when we fish for flatfish(flounder). They can pick the bait right off your hook and you never even know they're there. Thing is they won't let go until they get everything. You reel em in and they hold on. No fight it's like you're reeling in seaweed. I was like 7 or 8 the first time I got one. Freaky to see that thing materialize out of the murky depths.
It's not a doll it's an action figure.

If it was real shrimp boats would be clammering to fish that site where it was found. My vote real fake.

I believe it to be real. If anyone caught the deep sea portion of discovery channel's "Planet Earth", it featured these for a brief moment.

I bet that big sea bug would taste good boiled with lots of butter.

We ran this story in the newspaper the day before yesterday, it's no April Fool's joke

Actually, I think the funniest April Fools joke would be to run a story that was absolutely true, but hard to believe, on a day where everyone was expecting to be duped.

In looking it up on the Web, most of the entries come from the last two days. However, there is such a creature, but it is typically much smaller than the 30-inches claimed in the article.

My ONLY doubt is the photo, the timing, and the title..."Monster bug? It's no joke! ". I do NOT doubt that the species Bathynomus giganteus exists. That is well documented, easily found in a Web search (on National Geographic and the Smithsonian), and it looks like the picture.
