How much of your collection is "Scratch and Dent"??

Most of my Mego collection has repro pieces, or can be considered "scratch and dent." The only all-original figures I have are those that don't have accessories(Wonder Woman and Spidey), Iron Man and Isis. My Iron Man isn't perfect, but he displays well, and my Isis is actually pretty nice - the only way I would ever get rid of her is if I got one with absolutely perfect gold. I saw her early in my Mego days, at just the right time, so I got her for a good price. I'm also pretty happy that my RC Batman has an original belt and cape. The repro emblem, gloves, and cowl don't bother me, although if I found originals I could afford I'd take them. For me, it's pretty much a matter of how nice/original I can get vs still having money to pay bills AND still get more toys.

Since I only collect loose figures a number of my WGSH are "built" but all original. CTVT made it possible for stuff like my Knights, Pirates, and Robin Hood figures to look complete when they really aren't. My Titans are the same way thanks to Doc and Theressa. I always look to upgrade to original pieces when I can, and to a better condition figure all the time. I kinda like the hunt for the pieces and when I do sell on ebay or to a new collector I will usually put repro stuff on a figure so it looks correct and then it's their turn to hunt for originals to replace the repros. I think it's fine as long as it's not concealed or worded to possibly be misleading. I really don't consider restringing a body to be any factor to affecting value. One of the things I like about Mego collecting is the diversity between the collectors themselves. Some want MOC,MIP, etc. Some like loose figures, some are for repro figures and pieces, some are against them. Some collect 8 inch, some collect every mego line, and some collect Mego-like as well. It's all good, and that's what matters.

Exactly. There are some figures that I will never own, unless I find them at a yard sale where someone doesn't know what they have. However, I doubt that's going to happen, as I already used up most of my Mego luck on Wondergirl. I can't fathom paying what the AE's go for, so I will take repros of those and move along. The Teen Titans are kind of my grail pieces, so I HAVE to get those for my shelf, as nice/original as possible. For example, I have some of the parts for Speedy, and will use repros to complete him until I can get an upgrade. I don't mind paying for the Titans though, because shelling out 50 cents for Wondergirl kind of lowers the average for the entire team.

One of the thing I love about Mego collecting is there is something for everyone's budget.

It's pretty common to enter a hobby by purchasing some of the lower end figures and slowly moving up the ladder as you learn more about the hobby and become more aware of what is a fair price.

With that said, all of my figures are 100% original at least C-8 or better (there is on figure that I had to piece together but spent a little more by using all original parts rather than repro. parts....just a personal preference).

I also have all of my figures in boxes that are all C-8 or better but I do have two repro. boxes...one is a RM Robin and an RC Bats.

I still haven't finished my boxed WGSH collection after 4 years of looking since I'm usually not satisfied with the box condition or if I am, the price either gets out of the range I'm willing to pay or I've run out of funny money for the time being. But that's all fine with me. Keeps things interesting and always on the hunt even though I haven't purchased a Mego in about 2+ years now.

All my original figures are all original (with the exception of SSA gloves)....most are in C-7 - C-8 range....but I'm always looking to upgrade

I always wondered why when you first start collecting you'll take just about anything and it doesn't bother you. Then as time goes on just having a displayable figure isn't enough. Sometimes I have to sit back and remember why I collect.

Most of my collection is in good shape. My Catwoman could be better. I think I accpt a lesser figure for her because it's my least favorite Mego.

When you get started, you just want them all. After you have them all, upgrading is something to do. Otherwise, all that is left is staring at your shelf.

I agree with Dave. Most people don't jump out of the chute chasing high end expensive figures. Purchase a few affordable figures, learn along the way and then upgrade as money allows. You can always sell your beginner figures later to someone else just entering the market.

Yeah, it's fun just upgrading as you go along. As long as you don't pay stupid prices, you should be able to at least break even selling your lesser figure when a better version comes along (you might even make a bit of a profit. That's always nice!).

Every single loose figure (and one or two boxed ones) in my collection is comprised of "scratch and dent" repaired items. My joy in this hobby comes from finding a beater and restoring it to that "showroom form". There are restrings, refused plastic on the accessories, restitches jumpsuits, paint retouched heads, and in one case a paper emblem spliced from two torn ones, but all pieces are 100% vintage Mego.

That describes my fun in all of this, at this point.

Everything I have is loose and only 90% original, but for the things that are incomplete, I will be going repro for the time being.

I started a little over a year ago, collecting only WGSH. I have expanded to POTA, Trek, and Starsky and Hutch picking up nickel and dime pieces I thought I could clean-up and make displayable. I have some pieces I never dreamed of having and as time and money permits I will upgrade, but for now, I am happy with what I have.

My biggest thrill is that friends and family love to look at my stuff and not one of them would think of collecting, however, they want to see what I have and they all seem genuinely impressed with it.

In time, I hope to make up a collection that would impress the pros, but for now, I'm happy with what I have, the friendships I've made here, and the "ooh...I remember that" of my friends.

I prefer original stuff, but do repair work/repro subsitution in special cases. I pretty much echo Dave's sentiments in that when I finally, absolutely have no space left and no more pieces on my "want" list I'd look at upgrading at that time.

aafter you run out of space like i did . you look to upgrade and add afew pieces but nothing big. i do it for the joy now. mike
