    Any autograph collectors?

Anybody else here collect autographs? I collect through the mail, and just got this Mego Museum card back signed by Casey Kasem (voice of Robin on Super Friends). He also signed a blank index card I sent along.

    Neat little Mego tie-in.

I don't consider myself an Autograph Collector...but I do have two. One I got at a Trek Con., from George Takei(on 8 x 10 Pic of Him). Got to briefly talk to him about his idea for a Star Trek TV sersies..."Captain Sulu"!!

And another from Walter Koenig at my local Comic Shop. He was there because he had written a Story for a Star Trek Comic. It was so cool...it being such a small venue, I got to chat with him a bit.Really nice Guy!

I collect autographed football cards. And I have a great story about one that I got. I have been a rabid Dallas Cowboys fan since age 3 when my mom got me DC pajamas (all one piece including the feet). I started collecting football cards around 1988 or so. I had most of the DC cards available including a nice Tony Dorsett rookie card. Sometime in the early 90's, Tony Dorsett was in town as honorary captain of the football game we host here where the best high school kids from PA play against the best kids from Ohio. I forget what the game is called. It is played at Hersheypark stadium. I heard he was going to be signing autographs at a card show at one of the nearby hotels, so I marked it on the calendar to go to the show and get my rookie card signed. This was a couple of months in advance and we were so busy at work around that time, I was working 7 day weeks and usually 10 hour days. Lo and behold, I get home from work that Saturday and I am sitting eating supper and I have this foreboding feeling that I am forgetting something. I kept asking my wife, are you sure we weren't supposed to go somewhere today. Around 9pm it hits me like a ton of bricks. I FORGOT THE FRIGGIN CARD SHOW! I am devastated. I missed my chance to meet Tony Dorsett and get his autograph. So, I get this harebrained idea that maybe he is staying at the hotel where the show is. So I call and talk to the receptionist and say "I don't know if you can tell me this, but is Tony Dorsett staying there?" Thinking that maybe I could hang out there in the AM and catch him on his way out. The receptionist tells me "sure, do you want me to ring his room" And I am thinking - you can do that - heck yeah. So it rings and is answered "hello" and I hear a bunch of people chatting in the background and I ask "is Tony Dorsett there" and he answers "this is Tony". And I am like HOLY FREAKIN CRAP, I HAVE TONY DORSETT ON THE PHONE! So I explain how I missed him at the show and he says "come to the hotel at 9am tomorrow and I'll sign your card". So, we go to the hotel and the receptionist rings his room and he says "come on up, room 423" So we walk to room 423 and there is people milling about all over the place and I knock on the door and he answers wearing shorts and a towel wrapped around his shoulders as he just got out of the shower. He takes my card and chats with me for a few minutes and I thank him and turn around to leave and 15 people had formed a line behind me! I guess they were waiting for someone ballsy enough to knock on the door. He proceeds to sign autographs for everyone AND DOESN'T CHARGE A CENT FOR THEM! Here's a guy who just got out of the shower and is disturbed in his hotel room and is polite as can be to a line of people wanting his autograph. How cool is that?

I can't say I actively seek out autographs except when I go to conventions. I've actually just been able to meet Celebs and I was able to get them
My prized autograph is My Starting lineup Joe Dimaggio figure signed by Joe D for free.
My Dad knew him in the last years of his life and he was very kind and signed a few pics for me for free.

I was able to get My Mego Batman and Robin signed by Adam West and Burt Ward.

I'm still Dying to meet and get Lynda Carters autograph

I don't collect autographs per se but do have a few autographed items...mostly books from book signing events.

I have a few autographed books from book signing events that I attended....Cal Ripken Jr. is probably the most well known, I do have one of a politician but won't mention their name so as not to turn this into a political thread, the Motley Fool brothers, Gregory McGuire (signed a copy of Wicked for me), and some other lesser known names.

My most memorable event which I'm sure I mentioned once before was attending the Washington Redskins annual luncheon (probably 15 or 16 years ago). Mark Moseley (the 1980's field goal kicker) owned a travel company that we did business with and he invited me as a guest. This was the year that Heath Schuler was drafted. After the luncheon, most of the Redskins hung around to sign autographs and I remember getting quite a few.

Most everyone was really nice with a couple of exceptions which I don't mind saying their names.

Michael Westbrook was one of them. As soon as the luncheon ended and players generally hung around to sign autograph, talk to fans, etc., he simply got up and walked out of the room without signing a single one.

The other memorable jerk was Brian Mitchell. He was just standing there...no line for autographs or anything. I walked up to him and told him how much I enjoyed watching him play, etc. and if he would mind signing an autograph for me. You would have thought I was asking him to hand me Super Bowl tickets or something. He made some huge stink saying he was tired of signing autographs, blah, blah, blah. I actually told not to bother going out of his way and must have misunderstood when we were told the players were going to be hanging around to sign autographs. I simply turned and walked away from him.

A few years ago, I attended quite a few D.C. United MLS games and my kids and I would arrive at the games while the players were warming up and have the stars from the various teams sign a soccer ball from us. The only two that I wanted but was never able to obtain were Jozy Altidore and David Beckham. Beckham was impossible because it was his first year in the MLS and people were just swarming him. We almost got Altidore's but there were a ton of people getting his autograph and he had to leave because the game was just about ready to start.

I have taken my daughter to a few Women's Professional Soccer games (the Washington Freedom play their home games about 20 minutes from us). The players were really nice to my daughter. Mia Hamm was at one game as a spectator and she signed my daughter's soccer jacket for her as well as some other popular players who still play. The most difficult one was Hope Solo. She signed a few autographs but left the field before she got to my daughter. I remembered there was a back gate that the players walk by before they go to the locker room so I took my daughter up to the gate (nobody was standing there) and I asked Hope if she would come over and sign my daughter's jacket for her. She walked right over asked my daughter's name and what position she played, signed the jacket for her, she was very nice.

Great Tony Dorsett story. I had a similar dealing with Mo Vaughn years back. I'm a die hard sports fan especially for my home New England teams and was once into the sports scene the way I'm into toys today. Mo had a very bad rep as a signer, in fact Beckett price guide at one time had him as one of the worst. I happened to get an opportunity to meet him and he was one of the nicest guys I've ever met in all my sports dealings with pros. Being as straight forward as I tend to be I said I was surprised he gets the rep he does. His reply was just as straight forward. In public I pretty much sign and talk as long as I can but when I'm on the field I'm there to play baseball. That's what they pay me to do and they pay me well. I focus pretty much on the game and preparing for it. I'm sure most of the people complaining tried to get me while on the field and when I'm on the field I'm there to play ball. Made me look at situations people are in when judging them. Now I'm into comediens. More into getting pics with them than even the autographs but, have gotten a few. Wish I had pushed getting a George Carlin auto before he died. Saw him a bunch of times and never even tried to meet him and probably could have. Regret not trying now. Was a huge fan of his comedy and was glad to be able to say I saw him live. Kinda like seeing the Beatles or Led Zepplin to a rock fan.

I've met quite a few celebs and managed to meet many I have always wanted to meet. I do not collect autographs unless I have met the person myself or if they happened to be dead. Other than that, if I don't meet them and get the autograph myself, I have no interest in their autograph...as a rule.

I do have quite a few, even though I wouldn't say I collect them. I have some from all of the Cassidy family, Shari Belafonte, Nancy Dussault, Rip Taylor, David Levy, Bill Mumy, Miguel Ferrer, David Jolliffe, and a few more I can't recall right now. When I go on the Rick Springfield cruise this November, I'm gonna take my Rick doll and Jess and I are gonna make one for him! And yes, I hope he signs mine. I've heard he's a toy geek, (Star Wars) so I think he'd appreciate it!
