George Lopez Is 'Speedy Gonzales'

PRINT EMAIL MORE We've heard of projects getting the fast track, but this is taking things to a whole new level.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, New Line Cinema is planning a big budget, big screen adaptation of the beloved and controversial cartoon mouse Speedy Gonzales, with George Lopez set to provide the voice. The film, which is being developed by 'Garfield' writers scribes Alec Sokolow and Joel Cohen, will be a hybrid of live-action and CGI animation.
Speedy Gonzales, of course, has been a staple of Warner Bros. cartoons and films since the 1950s, racing around at top speed while shouting his signature, nonsensical line of "ˇAndale! ˇAndale! ˇArriba! ˇArriba!" While the "fastest mouse in all of Mexico" remains popular in Latin American countries, over the last decade he has become something of a lightning rod for criticism north of the border, as his antics and those of his fellow mice, particularly his lazy and occasionally inebriated cousin Slowpoke Rodriguez, have been denounced as racist caricatures.
Those concerns, however, are being tackled head on by Lopez and the studio, who plan to update the property into something more palatable for modern sensibilities.
"We wanted to make sure that it was not the Speedy of the 1950s -- the racist Speedy," co-producer Ann Lopez explained. "Speedy's going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and he's a little too fast for what they do. He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what he's good at."
What George Lopez is good at, of course, is bringing his unique take on ethnicity in America to mainstream audiences, as he has done in such high profile projects as the current big screen hit 'Valentine's Day' and his ongoing late night talk show 'Lopez Tonight.' But he's not the only member of the production with big time credits on his resume. In addition to penning 'Garfield,' Sokolow and Cohen, who previously wrote the classic 'Toy Story,' are crafting the upcoming high concept Jonas Brothers vehicle 'Walter the Farting Dog.'
With a pedigree like that, you can be sure we'll be checking this one out.
