I haven't seen Edge of Darkness, but I saw the Wolfman yesterday and enjoyed it quite a bit.

It's not going to win an Academy Award, but it was a fine updating of the B-movie classic.

Much like with Titanic and other movies that have had production problems, I think many of the movie reviewers had jaundiced views of the film before they saw it.

I'm not saying it's a perfect movie by any stretch. And I would have liked to have seen what Rick Baker's transformations would have looked like without CGI, but the CGI in this film didn't take me out of the movie like some reviewers have stated.

The movie is basically a remake of the 1941 classic, but with a few twists and turns, but all the stuff most fans of the original are looking for made it into the picture. The biggest difference is the relationship between Lawrence — not Larry in this one — and his dad.

There are even little homages to other werewolf movies, including Werewolf of London, Curse of the Werewolf, American Werewolf in London, Silver Bullet, Wolf and probably even the Howling, although I did not catch one.

I don't want to explain those nods because it might spoil the picture for someto , but they are there and well executed. But unlike Superman Returns, where the acknowledgment of the Donner films became the point of the movie and took you out of the action, in the Wolfman they were weaved into the script and important to the plot.

The movie is gory. I would be careful about taking a kid who is too sensitive tosee it. In this film, when there is a werewolf around, limbs, entrails and heads are going to fly like sawdust at a sawmill.

Werewolves in this fantasy are mean, vicious, indiscriminate killers. The Wolf-Man doesn't hunt for food, he hunts for sport, I guess that's the human half of him. If there are 30 gypsies in a camp, he's going to try to get them all — young, old, pretty or ugly fat or thin.

The Wolfman is a demonic super-natural beast in the film. He has the worst traits of a human and an animal blended together. He's kind of a cross between the Hulk and Wolverine with a bad attitude and a migraine headache. In other words if, he wants to eat you, there ain't nothing you can do about it. Scary strong, Scary quick, Scary clever and Scary nasty.

Is the movie melodramatic and a little hammy? Yeah sure, but name me a Universal horror picture that wasn't.

The film looks great, too. Cinematography is top notch. Dark and moody, but also clear. There's a lot of CGI of old London-town (like in the recent Sherlocke Holmes flick), but we are only going to see more and more of this in period movies because CGI is easier and less costly than building set.

Again, it this a great film, no. But, I had a really good time watching it. It much exceeded my lowered expectations because of mediocre reviews and stuff I had read about.

If you like the Wolfman or werewolves, put all the stuff you've read or heard about this movie and its production — including this post — out of your mind, and go see it.

Judge for yourself. But I think if you see it and have an open mind, you'll end up having a good time, unless you don't gore and loud noises.

Haven't seen either one yet, but the trailers from Wolfman look very promissing

We jst got back form The Wolfman and I thought Madmarva nailed it pretty well. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a Classic horror film in present day format. No senseless gore, but more than enough to make the point that this guy means business whe he's on the prowl. Good basic story and great cinematography.
