    MTV Changes Logo

MTV is embracing change. In nearly three decades on the air, almost everything about the cable network -- from its programming, to its focus, to its place in popular culture -- has changed with the times, except for its famous tagline, "Music television." Recently, the network quietly unveiled a new logo which has dropped the tagline entirely, indicating that MTV itself is leaving its original mission of an all-music channel in the dust.

The new logo is meant to put the focus on MTV's current slate of talent -- the stars of mostly reality shows like "Jersey Shore," "Teen Mom," and "The Buried Life." Since the logo (which seems to have a shorter "M" than the original) is also available in a see-through model, it can change when new stars come into the fold. Tina Exarhos, a spokesperson for MTV's marketing team, explained the change to "The New York Daily News": "If you watch the channel, you've seen that it's definitely going in a new direction. We really wanted to see the logo featured in a new way, and this was really meant to be able to house all the great things that are happening at MTV at any given time."

When MTV first revolutionized television in 1981, it was based on the idea of one network devoted entirely to music, a central hub where fans could watch music videos, see interviews with their favorite recording artists, and even get their news from a music fan's point of view. The channel was also a valuable promotional tool for the music industry itself, which no longer had to depend mainly on radio to get its product on an audience's radar. But over the years, MTV morphed into a channel that focused less on any one theme and more on targeting a specific teen and young-adult audience, ditching its music roots to deliver whatever the network perceived that audience wanted.

And, clearly, that audience is more into shows like "Jersey Shore" than old-school music video blocks like "120 Minutes."

"The MTV brand, to me, stands for such an irreverent groundbreaking brand, and unfortunately I feel a little underwhelmed when I look at this," Hamish McLennan, global chairman-CEO of advertising powerhouse Young & Rubicam, told Ad Age.

The new logo and its focus on the personalities that drive the channel is based on recent show successes like "Jersey Shore," which turned its stars into celebrities overnight. According to Ad Age, MTV is looking into developing a new tagline to match its new logo. Any suggestions?

Yeah, I've got a new tagline....."MTV: We Suck"

Seriously, I know I'm old-school but I really miss the old MTV from my teen-age years.....

The can change the logo all they want...they still suck. They still don't get it...they were called MTV for a reason...MUSIC TELEVISION!! I haven't seen music on there in about 20+ years. Now it's all reality crap on there. Start playing music instead of the junk that they have on there. Bring back 120 Minutes and Headbangers Ball. And on Sundays you could bring back some original programming. Sundays used to be cool on MTV. Star the day off with the Beatles cartoons and end it with some Monty Python or The Maxx or Aeon Flux...or better yet The State and The Young Ones....and that would be the existance of any sort of MTV original programming...the rest of the time Music on a Music Television station. What a concept. They just suck and have sucked for almost 20 years.

I would rather watch Mr. Rodgers than the senseless reality shows they throw out there! In regard to the music, I know I'm showing my age and my taste, or lack thereof, of the current music scene . . . . but I don't think I'd watch endless hours of Lil Wayne and Lady Gaga videos either.

I wish they still played videos. A new logo won't help.

I no longer WANT my MTV....

And MTV has sucked for about 13 years or so IMO....that was around '97 when they drastically reduced the amount of airtime devoted to music videos in favor of original and reality programming.

It's always a shame when these niche channels walk away from the concepts that made them original and innovative and successful in the first place. The same thing (to a lesser extent) has happened to TV Land with it's movies/reality shows and Cartoon Network with it's live action movies.

It sucks but I'm starting to feel like a grumpy old man at the age of 42... "Back in MY day, MTV showed music videos"

                    "What's a music video, dad?"

The Fuse music channel is the MTV of this generation. I tend to watch that when I have the to chance and want to see videos. Mtv does have other channels that do play videos.

The Internet pretty much killed videos on TV why wait when somewhere on the net you can see your Favs

Also all this reality crap still bugs me...especially Jersey shore the Executive who green lighted that mess should be slapped for exposing kids to that kind of crap.....

Speaking of music, I think the internet pretty much killed albums (as a whole) too.

No longer do you need to sit through stuff you've never heard and give it a chance -- today you go right to the songs you want without even hearing the others.

You'll never see a Sgt Pepper or Dark Side of the Moon ever again... Today's music buyers only want the icing on top and forget about the rest of the cake.

Yup Totally agree.....The Album was what you looked forward to. You would buy it go home and listen to all the tracks. Now when you buy on line you pick and choose off the album, takes away from the work of the artist.

I can't ever imagine listening to Sgt peppers in parts to me when I play that I have to listen to it from beginning to end.
