You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return... -

>Superhero movies and TV shows constantly running and we're MISERABLE!
Even back in the day, I noticed a lot of hardcore fans who didn’t really get any enjoyment out of their hobbies. I think for comics it changed during the 80's when they became “graphic novels.” Around that time they HAD to be pertinent, and “not just for kids;” and you got a lot of commentary to this end from critics and pundits. And I think the fans bought into it. To quote Alan Moore:
“...while previously people might have looked at them as though they were subnormal for reading a superhero comic, now that superhero comics had been rebranded as "Graphic Novels," it was considered sophisticated and cutting-edge to be seen reading a comic, even if it was just a bunch of old superhero stories put together in a slicker format. It looked more grown-up; it wasn't necessarily more grown-up, but it was put together in a way that looked more socially acceptable.”
And I think that mentality spilled into ALL the nerdly arts; so that every film, comic or game isn’t just entertainment: it’s validation of a lifestyle. Which puts an insane edge on everything; every critique is an act of war, every dissenting opinion that of a blood foe. A lot of the hardcore fans seem entrenched to the point of paranoia; not getting any real joy from their hobby, but desperately analyzing every little bit of minutia, holding it up as an example of how important said hobby is. (Hence the keen attention given to numbers and sales by commentators.)
....after a bit I REALLY started hating working at the comic shop....
>I've gotten insults about my mother over fluff pieces I've written over action figures,
I shouldn’t laugh.... but this is pretty ridiculous. (Like it’s HER fault you don’t see the sheer genius of the 1992 “Super-Eco-Arctic-Space-Blast Batman” figure.) I tend to avoid commentary on articles online for this reason.

Ok, sorry to get off the current discussion but I am most curious about the following.
I want to know this. If Hasbro rereleases Stretch Armstrong toys because of the new movie, do current saftey standards or regulations prohibit them from basically making the toy the same way? I mean can they basically stuff a rubber figure full of corn syrup still? Or are they going to have to change the way they make these toys? I really want another Stretch made just like they did back in the late 70's.Last edited by Jason73; Feb 8, '10, 5:17 AM.Comment

I don't know if I'd say "A lot" but I can't deny this isn't true of some fans I've met. A friend of mine owns a comic shop and has for 30 years, his feeling is that comics are a very personal and isolated hobby, it's reading. Some people do this but also engage in an active social life, other customers he has, he feels that picking up their comics IS their social life.
I spend my days getting uptight about all kinds of things, the last thing I want to do is get mad about Mr. Spock or that Kingpin is black.
Getting back to the topic:
There should be no problem with reissuing Stretch as Corn Syrup. The problem is, do they do 70s Marlon Brando Stretch or that Mullet guy from the 1990s? Tough call but I bet the 90s kids win this one....Places to find PlaidStallions online: https://linktr.ee/Plaidstallions

When people start to get vicious and bitter about it, it's time in the immortal words of the great William Shatner to "Get a life."You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. It's more of an internet mssg board thing than a nerd thing. I visit multiple boards that have nothing to do with toys (or pop culture, etc) and it's all the same.. nitpicking, complaining, pointless arguing..
It's just the nature of the web board beast.Comment

Yeah and we'll probably get a "Rock Lords" movie or how about a live action version of "Ants in the Pants"
Come on Hollywood just admit it, your dead and stinking and writers are truly an endangered species you don't want to protect. So keep making movies based on nostalgia. If this pace keeps up I so can't wait for the box office marquee in five years when it reads "iPod the movie" Starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson as the Apple's Steve's.Comment

>Being a nerd is supposed to be silly fun.
I agree; unfortunately I've found a lot of folks that are WAY too involved. (Maybe they just stand out more?) Most of the folks around here are pretty good (just don't mention Naruto) but I've seen some sites that are permeated by hardcore nerdosity. (One site has so many geezers that I had to stop reading.Yes yes.... every comic that's worth reading was written before 1970.)
....so I hope nobody who's replied on this post feels slighted; I was posting in general.
>five years when it reads "iPod the movie"
Oh man! You've figured out the sequel to Tron!
