    Stretch Armstrong Movie?????

Taylor Lautner to Play Stretch Armstrong
    Source:Universal Pictures
    February 5, 2010

Universal Pictures has announced that "The Twilight Saga" star Taylor Lautner will play the title character in Stretch Armstrong, to be released in 2012. The announcement was made today by Universal Pictures Chairman Adam Fogelson and Co-Chairman Donna Langley.

Stretch Armstrong is moving to 2012 to allot time to shape the project into a 3-D superhero adventure and to accommodate Lautner's existing commitments.

"In the past two years, Taylor has emerged as a real star at the global box office. He brings the perfect balance of energy and athleticism to the role of an unlikely super hero with a fantastic super power," said Langley. "We couldn't be more pleased that he has agreed to be our Stretch."

Stretch Armstrong is based on the iconic action figure made popular around the world beginning in the 1970s and re-launched in the 1990s. Academy Award®-winning producer Brian Grazer (A Beautiful Mind, 8 Mile, American Gangster) will team with Hasbro to bring Stretch Armstrong to life. Steve Oedekerk (Bruce Almighty) has written the screenplay, and Hasbro's Goldner and Schneir also produce.

Aw, fer the love of Mike. Not that I was expecting this flick to be anything but silly, but that kid can't act.

As far as the toys, Stretch Armstrong was manly! Stretch Taylor Lautner? Ehhhhh..

I love how some people on the web are complaining that he doesn't look like Stretch Armstrong. Even something as vapid as this can't escape the endless nerd nit picking.

It does seem odd, considering there's really no story or anything to remain true to. Equally odd is how many big names get attached to something like this. So.... between the two it achieves an inexplainable cultural importance. Somehow EVERYTHING is either meaningless or the most consequential thing ever.

I wonder how widespread this mentality is. It's tough to gauge from online interaction since commentators HAVE to say something ("er.... he's a rubber guy or something, right?" doesn't catch the eye) and it's better to complain. (Makes hyperbole easier.) And SOMEWHERE out there is the guy for whom Stretch Armstrong is their favourite thing ever; and if he pipes in you're bound to get a.... unique and biassed opinion. Normally I'd dismiss this as the ramblings of a cloistered idiot; but when, more and more, you see stuff like Ridley Scott directing "Monopoly: the Movie" you gotta start asking how nerdified society in general is becoming.

Cut us some slack. We're nerds, it's what we do. Picking apart stuff like this is all part of our proud nerd culture and history.

So, we don't just want to make fun of emo Stretch Armstrong, we have to.

Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

                      Please let this be sarcastic.

It's not the making fun thats the problem, I think that's probably healthy, it's the outrage that saddens me.

It's not always popular or glamorous, but nerd nit picking is essential in keeping the wheels of pop culture turning.

Where would our culture be without the nerds? Who else endlessly obsesses, researches and catalogs the minute details of toys, movies, TV shows, comic books, video games and outdated fashions from years gone by? Who else would endlessly debate who is better, Kirk or Picard? Who would ask the immortal question, could Superman beat up the Hulk?

Where would we be if this pop culture history was lost? Not a world I'd want to live in I can tell you that.

The best critics, writers and toy makers, Nerds. Roger Ebert, Nerd. Peter Jackson, nerd. Gene Roddenberry, nerd. Kevin Smith, big fat nerd. Let's also not forget, we would not be getting all these great retro toys and licenses without nerds. Nerds that make them and nerds that buy them. My god, it is beautiful!

Be proud of your nerd heritage and when you see something that obviously needs to be nit picked to death, you do it! Our very culture depends on it.

                          .
Being a nerd and being a nitpicker can be exclusive of each other. Lots of good comes from nerdery and the nitpicks, I concede that to you.

But honestly who the hell gets bent out of shape over a Stretch Armstrong movie? The character hasn't an ounce of backstory or to be honest, canon. If there's massive outcry about this, we all have too much time on our hands.

In the age of the interwebs, this kind of thing seems to be running at overcapcity and way too negative and entitled these days. I don't think "Nerd Rage" is doing anybody any good and I have to say I'm kind of bored of it.

It does seem weird that everything is either the greatest ever, or a complete pile. There's a decent Cracked.com article about that:

its worse than that, we live in a marvelous age where we're fricking catered to! TV coverage of SDCC? Movies based on toy lines? Mego jokes on prime time TV? Superhero movies and TV shows constantly running and we're MISERABLE! We're in mecca and all some of us do is ***** and moan about minute details. I pity the guy who had organic webshooters ruin spider-man or my miserble moron friend who couldn't get over the changes to Lord of the Rings. Entertainment is meant to relax us, not be another stress.

I've gotten insults about my mother over fluff pieces I've written over action figures, portions of the nerd community really needs to go outside.
