When vinyl became scarce, I had gone onto tapes because that was all I had in my car and in my theatre days, I did a lot of travel time. My wife (then my wife to be) gave me a walkman as a gift for our first xmas together. Since I didn't own any CDs, one of my wife's co-workers had the Gin Blossoms that they didn't want anymore so it came to be my first CD. The first ones I actually bought were of Billy Joel (River of Dreams), Bruce Horsby (Harbor Lights), and a Star Trek compilation soundtrack. -
Very good album, I bought that CD when it first came out.
How much did CDs cost in the US at the beginning? They were around $24.99 in Canada at the time, and after being used to paying $10-13 for vinyl or cassettes, paying double or more was really rough.Leave a comment:

Another person with great taste in music. Great choices from cool bands.
Snob? Aren't we all to some degree when it comes to ear candy?
I bought Positively Dumptruck, by Dumptruck - a very obscure band from ...Maine, maybe? The SECOND one I bought was "Chips from the Chocolate Fireball" by Dukes of Stratosphere. This was 1987, I was 16 years old and fancied myself a music snob already. I won't mention the Eurythmics CD I got from the Columbia record club a few months previously...Leave a comment:

Nice!!! Excellent choice!
I recall seeing the Banshee's catalog appear on CD as an import first before being released domestically. I think it was the "Scream" back in 1985. Always hung out at the import section awaiting what albums were going to be pressed on CD.

my first was a boom box by realisticMy first CD player was kind of weird ... I got it at K-Mart and it was about the size and shape of a police scanner and had no speakers - you had to listen to it with headphone or buy external speakers which came seperately... I got it around 1987 and it cost like $60.00 (which was very cheap at that time)...
One thing I didn't like about it, songs that were connected but split into 2 tracks (like Sgt Pepper and With a Little Help From My Friends) would make a loud BLIP sound when crossing over to the next track ... Was terrible for playing Dark Side of the Moon ... If i'm remembering correctly a lot of CD players had this problem during the early days.
it cost like $400+!! some guy owed my stepfather money and he gave it to him, and he gave it to me
