    Record Stores...

Anyone miss the days of going out to buy Records, Cds, Tapes, etc. Although sometimes stuff was overpriced there was always something special about going music shopping. I remember any given mall in the area I grew up in had 2 or 3 music stores in any given mall (lots of stuff I bought then I STILL have). Not to mention all the independent music stores in the area which were the best. Sadly there all gone and the Fye (which sucks) in the area Im living in now is closing its doors next week. So now there are No music stores in any mall or ANY independent music stores around here. Sign of the times I guess. Damn Ipods! (althought I have one).
This thread could easily become a downloading debate..lol

I miss them a lot. We had a big one where I grew up in Ft Lauderdale, Peaches records and tapes. It was huge and you spend hours in there. Not metion the one that were head shops also.

In Sparks, Nevada we had Eucalyptus Records and Tapes in the 70's. It was the "Go-To" place back then. The place smelled of sandalwood, had Rock N Roll tapestries all over, and they also had a headshop there. Eucalyptus Records was always playing music pretty loud, but unlike alot of retail places today, the music didn't suck.

Even today I miss "The Warehouse" which was the music store I used to frequent. I miss music stores because unlike places like Wal*Mart, music was their business and you could buy or order just about anything in print.

I love to go to Amoeba Music or Rasputin Music. They have that great feel of a classic Record Store. I can always find Cool stuff. I posted some links with more detail on them both

I miss them dearly. Now I'm stuck either going to the mall and sifting through all thirty-eight albums that Hot Topic carries or driving all the way down to St. Pete and digging through bins and bins of unsorted, over-priced stuff.
The record store that I worked in back in Baltimore just closed down after twenty years, so I can't even fly up there to go record shopping anymore.

            RIP Reptilian Records

I really miss them too. I remember going out after school every Friday w/ my friend John to buy records. I also miss 45s. If you didn't wanna buy the whole album, or sometimes the 45 would come out before the album so you could get a taste of what the sound was like. Yeah...and getting premiums in the records like posters, or iron-ons, or bookcovers or bags. That was the best! Or even hanging the cover in your room!

My local independent record store was called Country Pie

                Man they were sweet.

They used to do free sidewalk live concerts every Saturday night during the summer months.

The bands they'd get were local, but good.

Besides also specializing in new and old out of print records, they'd also carry fun record industy promo items.

They folded up about a year after the new mall came to town which had Sam Goodie and The Wall

I miss that ole place ... Used to be my regular hangout on Sat nights.

I was never a big album buyer but I loved 45's. I used to go to the Record Theater (in Buffalo) all the time. They had a HUGE oldies 45 section and a big out-of-print section as well. If you bought 5 or 6 at one time you got a discount so I always made multiple purchases. Plus they had these stamps that you collected and filled in a booklet (I think it was 1 stamp for every dollar you spent) and when you filled the book it was good for $5 off a purchase. Kind of like Green Stamps. I also remember shopping for records at Cavages.
I still play my records every so often. I was just listening to some 45's a couple weeks ago.

Still go. We have a Doctor Disk here in Windsor, and they stock all sorts of stuff you can't find anywhere else.

God I wish this stuff came back with a vengeance....The last record store we had was Record Giant over 15 years ago and even then it was a mis-nomer because they were all CDs. The Last Unicorn kicked around for a while but it was used 45s/LPs and eventually used CDs. Can't even find decent stuff and garage sales anymore....

Growing up in Miami, I practically lived at the Sam Goodies in the Grove, Specs at Miracle Center or the Peaches on US1.

Nowadays my choices are limited to Best Buy or FYE.... and since FYE just closed up their doors, and the closest Best Buy is in Orlando, Sarasota, or Lakeland... well my choices are ultra limited. But that's ok. Today's music is crap

Actually we usually go to Rock and Roll Heaven in Orlando, an independent RECORD store. Yes... VINYL RECORDS. Not just old stuff either, current releases on vinyl too.

Yeah, growing up there was a huge Peaches and a place called Waxie Maxies. I used to get 45's all the time. Look at the top 100 lists. All of that fun stuff. One could argue that surfing online for a song to download is the same, but the difference is the social interaction. There is no "dude behind the counter" at itunes
                            It's all good!

Oh man, I loved going to Record Theater in Buffalo, I went there all the time. They had a fantastic selection and I remember that big 7" singles section too. I probably still have a half filled book of stamps in a box somewhere too.

I also loved going to Toronto and visiting all of the record stores on Yonge Street (especially the iconic Sam the Record Man) and buying tons of stuff I couldn't find locally. I really miss those places.

I also frequently visited Poptones, in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Kind of a head shop, selling t-shirts and various drug paraphernalia, but I went there for their great selection of vinyl, including tons of imports and bootlegs. I bought a lot of metal and punk records there, and they always had very interesting stuff playing on the store's stereo.
