If Gretzky had only held onto the Honus Wagner Card!

Well, I guess there is something to be said of certain collectibles rising in value. I'd say making almost 7x your money in 16 years. If my math is right, that's about a 22% compounded rate of return which is better than investing in the stock market. Who said collectibles don't make good investments? Oh yeah, it is my wife who said that

It really isn't any crazier than spending millions on a Picasso or even worse a Jackson Pollack (I just don't get it).

People see art in all kinds of things and will pay money for it.

The company I work for owns Eric Clapton's Blackie Guitar. I think the price was around $750-$800K for the guitar. Sounds crazy to me but the company turned around and had Fender make 250 duplicate copies of the guitar right down to the scratches and cigarette burn on the neck and sold them for $20-$30K a piece. The reproductions were sold out immediately. Plus Blackie still sits in a vault and due to its interesting history is probably worth 2 to 3 times what was paid for it.

What a waste of cash. I have a repro form the 80's that cost me maybe a buck. Looks exactly the same, and isn't that all you do with these things anyway..look at them?

2 mil for something that can be exactly duplicated is just plain stupid IMO. I guess some folks will spend anything to have bragging rights.

Speaking of Gretzky, I actually have his rookie card, (Topps not O-Pee-Chee graded 7.9)
and that was really the only top-dollar sports card I really ever wanted. When I got it my boss wanted to buy it from me and I told him where he could put his change. Now, let's say if I stumbled on something big that I didn't care about I would sell it with no hesitation, but I am a crazy collector of things and people I love, so asking me about this would be a moot point. Cause if I had the money I would get the first issue of the Hulk right now. Value is what you put on something to make it worth more, but if there is history and love there then value isn't an issue. I have my Mego "Hulkie" and I've had him since I was 3 and there is no amount of money that could separate him from me. For Pete's sake I can remember when and where I got him! Most people who come into my house may touch and examine most of anything, however if someone even so much as looks at that figure I go off. He's priceless to me. He dosen't even sit on the shelf with the other Hulks. He's right beside me all the time.
