Actually, I really don't like the no catch rule if the receiver is driven out of bounds by a defender before he can get his feet down. I realize that the original rule was leading to a lot of supposition and questioning whether or not a receiver would have landed with both feet in if he hadn't been pushed out. Now that the rule has changed; I am seeing defensive backs looking like they are practicing pushing receivers out to prevent both feet from coming down when they otherwise would catch the ball.

also why lose your downs if kicking a FG, if you kick it on 2nd down and miss you should be able to use your other downs, I know it's weird but imagine having 3 chances to kick it

Actually, they do have a rule I think that you can attempt a fieldgoal on 2nd down for example but if you don't actually kick it; you can use your other downs.
I am also wondering if anyone is familiar with the really old NFL rules (from the 1930's and 1940's). I was watching a DVD on the history of the Washington Redskins and they talked about how Sammy Baugh was a really good punter in addition to Quarterback but used to punt on 3rd down. I can't for the life of me think of why anyone would punt the ball on 3rd down except that maybe players weren't quite as athletic as they are now....meaning the field goal kickers couldn't kick them as hard or the quarterbacks couldn't throw them quite as far. Baugh was also 6'2" and 185 lbs. Holy smokes, he'd get killed in the NFL today at that weight."The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith."

Danny White was the last Quarterback that also punted, at least that I am aware of. However, he never punted on 3rd down, he was just the punter when it was 4th down. I agree that I can't think of a reason why you would want to punt on 3rd down.
And you are correct, you can attempt a field goal on any down. But you can only retry if it is not kicked (bobbled snapped, etc.). I think t2c is referring to actually kicking it multiple times and getting another chance if you missed. Which is interesting. What if you missed, would the ball be placed back at the original line of scrimmage for the 2nd attempt or would it be from where the kick was made, as they do it now?Comment

I'd like to see the market blackouts and the lack of the second game being shown after a home game gone. I really don't see how not showing the game due to poor ticket sales or not showing the late or early game affects anything. most of us poor slobs can't afford to go to a game anyway.You must try to generate happiness within yourself. LSU was famous for punting on 3rd down during their NC year in 58. Because of the new substitution rules that year, the coach divided the team into three sub team, the Gold Team, White Team, and The Chinese Bandits. Instead of substituting one or two players, he would substitute the entire team. (back than, a player could only substitute once per half, and only the starting team could come back on the field again once during the half). The Chinese Bandits were not much of an offensive team but great defensive team. So if they got the ball deep in their own territory, they would run a couple plays, and if no 1st down, they would punt on 3rd down and put the other team deep and use their defense to control the game.
This three team concept is the main reason LSU won that year. By the start of the 4th quarter, the other team's starters would be worn out from playing against a constant fresh team, and LSU would bring back in the main team (White Team), and win the game.
Ole Miss beat LSU the next year during the Sugar Bowl (1960 Sugar Bowl), using this same strategy, punting on 3rd down, full team substitutions, etc.Last edited by theantiquetiger; Jan 11, '10, 5:58 PM.sigpicComment

I cannot stand the NFL. I would like to see it run like European Soccer. Every city has a team, and the Super Bowl played every four years. If not every city, atleast every state.
I could really care less if the Saints make it to the Super Bowl, because that is a New Orleans team, not Baton Rouge.sigpicComment
