Yes...this is the very best CGI I've ever seen.

Avatar has taken movie-making into a whole new higher level.

Did you go to Friday's 7pm showing at AMC Bay Street 16 Emeryville?

You might have bumped into my sister and her friends.

I've been swamped these past couple weeks...been thinking about seeing this show, but the commercials just looked weird.
I've glanced a few reviews..still didn't get me....until ole Joe said he liked it.

Took my son today and saw it in Digital 3D.

          Wow.

          Jim has outdid himself again.

Not real sure about the storyline...but damn, the environment he created is astonishing.

If nothing else, go see it NOW on the big screen in 3D and enjoy a sensory overload for three hours.

          WOW.

I personally think this is one of those movies that's driven by hype and couple of years from now people will look back and see how truly average and derivative it is. I saw Dances with Wolves. I don't need to see a remake in space with CGI furries. I'm also a little tired of the white messiah syndrome all these movies follow.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

You know what, if you think it's hype, you've seen it before or it sounds derivative, or it doesn't scratch your sci-fi itch well enough or it's Dance with Wolves/Pochahantas/Return of the Jedi all over again. Screw that, you think too much. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR and go see it. It's the best experience I've had at the movies in a very long time.

I personally think you need to see the movie before deciding it's "average and derivative." And the movie didn't have much positive hype at all - everyone expected it to fail. But once people actually saw it... word of mouth spread, and it became a blockbuster.

Edited to say that Scott, who's post I didn't see before responding, is absolutely right!

Maybe you would feel differently if it was your ancestors being depicted as some furry's twisted sexual fantasy. It would also be nice if the native people had hero rise from their ranks just once and they didn't need to be saved all time by the great white messiah.

And yes the story is very derivative. This story has been done many, many times before and done much better, in my opinion. Unobtainium? Give me a break. I'm also a avid video game player and less impressed by computer graphics than a lot of people seem to be. So the wow pretty graphics is lost on me and just looks like any other video game to me.

I'm not here to change anyone's mind and I don't want to bring down the thread or take it off topic. If other people like it, great. I'm happy for you.

Werewolf, you're related to the Na'vi??

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I still don't think you can fairly judge a movie you haven't seen.

In a way, because they are meant to represent Native Americans.

Do you like any new movies at all?

The reason I say that is because you always sound grumpy about all the new movies that come out...you are like Mike's twin brother...lol.

It's just all entertainment...even the old film classics...it's all escapism.

There's no need to be so negative about everything.

                            Lol!

For starters, I liked Crystal Skull, Iron Man, Ghost Rider, the first Pirates of the Caribbean and Star Trek. I'm also still holding out hope for The Wolf Man even though hollywood's recent vampire re-imaginings have been poor, in my opinion.

I have my reasons for disliking Avatar.

                            [Edit]

I also think the new A-TEAM movie looks fun.

                              Ok...fair enough.

I like most of the movies you posted except for Ghost Rider...I thought that flick sucked more than Pepé Le Pew taking a pee after eating asparagus....

I wasn't gung-ho to see it, despite the visuals. A good friend was just floored by it, and he's hard to impress. That combined with good word of mouth from folks here and others in general made me take a chance. I was plesantly surprised to say the least. The characters are well-conceived, the story is played out well, and it the visuals are flawlessly achieved.

There is "furry nudity" but it's quick and not gratuitous. More like a tame Nat Geo photo shoot in space. It's not sexed up in the least, compared to most modern movies.

I can't see how it exploits Native Americans or any native culture that was forced out by colonists. If anything the movie is squarely in their corner.
