Just got back from seeing Avatar

Just got back from seeing Avatar and was blown away. It was a phenomenal movie, emotionally triumphant, and anyone who says otherwise... well, I just don't get it. What more could you want from a movie?

I've heard people say it was thin on plot, and, aside from not explaining just what in the hell made Unobtainium (silly name!) so valuable, I disagree. Sure, the plot was fairly straightforward - humans stealing land from the seemingly-primitive aliens - and yes, it's an allegory for what we did to the American Indians, but so what? It was a beautiful story told beautifully. It was amazing, both in the scope of the completely alien world and, yes, in the special effects.

I may be going out on a limb here, but in ten or twenty years I think people will revere it much the same way we revere Star Wars today: as an amazing, landmark movie that changed the face of film as we know it.

I agree completely on all counts. I haven't been that riveted to a movie since Gladiator. Everyone says the story was thin but they were riveted to the movie because of the effects. I had just the opposite feeling. The effects were great, don't get me wrong. However, I was riveted to the movie due to the storyline. I think I'll take my wife and daughter this weekend.

I absolutely agree Joe. I loved the film. I loved the world created for it. The underlying message in the Pocohontas like story is a good one and one I never tire of.

It was a completely immersive experience unlike any I have encountered at the movies before.

I plan on seeing it again at the IMAX Theatre soon.

I think it is representative of colonialism throughout history. For example, the same thing happened here with Aboriginal people.

Great movie and I would also love to see it again at the IMAX in 3D.

Saw it on Imax last night. Words don't do it justice. It was a visual effects masterpiece that was totally emotionally resonant. Incredible. I will never say a snarky thing about James Cameron again.

I got to see it last week with the wife to be and we both loved it. We saw the 3d version but not at an I MAX. I sort of want to see it again without the 3D. I don't know that the 3D really added much to the all ready visually overloaded movie but I want to compair the 2.
It is a MUST SEE at the theater, on a big screen. I know there are so many out there that wait for the dvd to watch at home but unless you have a 240" tv (20') or better, you are not going to be overwelmed properly!

Love the movie, I had to wait 3 hours in line to see it on IMAX, people drove from San Diego to watch it too. Great movie!!!

I really liked it. Obviously, the story is pretty derivative (Dances with Wolves, Last Samurai, Little Big Man), but the world is so unique and the visuals so stunning it doesn't matter. Plus, what they do with the story is still done well. Visually, it reminded me of what a live action Hiyao Miyazaki movie might look like. I think Cameron has definitely watched Miyazaki. If you combined Dances With Wolves with any number of Miyazaki movies, you get Avatar.

Sadly, we don't have an IMax here, but we did see it in 3-D. Seeing it on DVD/Blu-Ray won't be the same, but my wife and I were already speculating (and drooling!) over the possible extras.

Saw it today with the boy and a buddy of mine (who'd already seen it once), and I have to agree on all accounts. For whatever reason, the marketing didn't make me want to see it that badly, but word of mouth from everyone who saw it convinced me to go. I'm so glad I did. The look and feel of the movie is astounding, and flawless. You totally believe the entire world, and even the interaction with humans. It makes movies like Hulk from two years ago look horrible by comparison. And I was really taken in by the story. Yes, it's a story we've seen before, but it takes many interesting turns, and Cameron does a great job making you care for the characters. I even begrudgingly admired the bad guy, he was such a bad arse.

Definitely glad I saw it in a theater, in 3-D. The 3-D was done well too, not too over the top. It just added to the experience.

Just got back from seeing it with my kids. Absolutely loved it. A masterpiece. It's basically Dances With Wolves in outer space. The effects were truly groundbreaking. What a difference just a few years makes....considering everyone was drooling over the CGI in Star Wars and then Lord of the Rings....these CGI characters blow anything in those movies away....not to take anything away from those movies, but the effects are amazing. The characters have real depth and weight to them. The creatures actually look real. The interaction between real actors and CGI characters is flawless.....the only area where it looked Computer animated was when the warriors, along with Jake, were climbing up to the aeries and there were a bunch of them running up the cliff like ants....but it was a minor thing.

Bottom line is it's a great movie, go see it if you haven't already. I wanted to see it in 3d but the matinee was sold out so we saw standard. Think I will get a sitter and take the wife next weekend.
