I'm bummed that the original versions on DVD are just old non-anamorphic transfers (i.e. not enhanced for widescreen TVs). I have a bad feeling that's the best we will ever get for the original versions.

Still have my LD Player (Actually have 3 of them...last one I got has a DVD player built in) and still have my LD's. This is THE Star Wars set to have...Original versions of the movie with cleaned up sound and picture (Widescreen/Letterbox) :

Star Wars Wide Screen Collectors Edition - eBay (item 230417445516 end time Jan-04-10 10:07:09 PST)

Shame of it is...I paid $250 for my set when it originally came out. Great extras...Great Sound...Great Picture...and a cool book on Lucas that came with the set.

I watched the special editions, just to see what the fuss was about.
Now I only watch the extra discs, with the original versions.
I don't mind some wobbly effects. They were good enough for me in 1977, and they still are for me now.
I can never, ever watch SW with the Jabba scene again. Or "Jedi Rock" in ROTJ.
Only Empire seems more or less untouched.

They way I see it: The Mona Lisa has been admired for hundreds of years, just the way she is. I don't particularly want to see her with an Ipod, because "that's progress."
                Leave well enough alone....

I tend to agree. The Jedi Rock thing would've been tragic even if Jim Henson (RIP) had come out with it as a muppet spoof.

I always wanted to pick up that set, but reports of some people having problems with laser rot on these particular discs kind of scared me off.

Never seen this set with Laser Rot. Laser Rot was more common with the early issue LD's. This set was probably released around '94. LD's basically started to disappear here in the states around '98/'99. LD's had been around for about 10 years before this set came out. All the Laser Rot stuff had been worked out by the time the set came out.

Maybe they were just rumours then, or I'm confusing them with a different SW set? Situations involving laser rot definitely improved as the format progressed (the old MCA "Discovison" discs from the late 70's-early 80's are terrible with the problem!), but I've heard that even some late issue discs from the 90's had rare "bad batches", depending on what factory they were manufactured at. Luckily my very humble LD collection has only one disc suffering from the problem.
