Canvas oil painting question .. anyone know anything about art ?

Just helped a buddy of mine move.
As a thanks he gave me a framed handpainted painting on stretched canvas ...
Sorry I can't post a pic - my camera batteries are dead.

I'm probably going to try selling it ... I know he wouldn't care.

My question is, is there a way I can tell if it's an acrylic or oil painting ?

When I sell it i'd like to know for the description.

If this helps any, it's very rough and shows few brush strokes ... looks like 90% of it was done with a palet knife.

Acrylic has a brighter Flatter look to it. Oil's colors are deeper and richer also gives off a shine from the Canvas.......Older Oils paintings If not taken care of Yellows and cracks everywhere. Also the Brush strokes can be seen much clearer.....and might smell of turpentine.

Acrylic is almost like plastic......and can be thinned to look like watercolors. Acrylic Fades in Sunlight, Oil Cracks.......

Acrylic is usually not used with a palet knife because how fast Acrylic dries.....

      Thanks for the info ....

I scraped up a few batteries (out of my razor) to take a few pics just to make sure ...

So what your saying, you think it is an oil ?

Yeah Mike that Defo looks like oil...you can tell by the strokes in the trees and the palet knife used in the foreground.....and the brush strokes in the hair and in the water.....It's a beautiful painting should be an easy sell for you......

          Cool, Thanks

What would you say would be a good asking price ?

The canvas is about 20" x 24" (not including wood frame)

The frame will go with it, though.

I'd start at $100 for it....or a bit more. The frame adds to it....I'm sure someone will buy it...It's a real beautiful painting. I'm sure some Doctor would buy it for their office.

I like it, looks like a damn fine framing job too. Oils are layered, they have a texture, acrylic is much thinner, the layers aren't as apparent.
