    The Cove

Who has seen this powerful...yet disturbing documentary?

The Cove is about Japanese fishermen selling chosen dolphins to trainers from around the world for Sea Worlds, and other show venues for tourists...but the dolphins not chosen...are taken into this water cove...where they simply disappear.

So an undercover camera team goes into the night...and place hidden cameras to tape what happens in the cove.

    Not pretty.

Pretty powerful stuff...it also deals with the selling of dolphin meat...which contains absurd amounts of mercury...which leads to birth defects...and other kinds of diseases...and even death.

    I don't know if it's appropriate for kids...but I think it's very educational viewing.

I highly recommend it...check it out.

Ric O'Barry leads the team to protect the dolphins...he was the original trainer for the dolphins in the original Flipper television show...he now regrets ever doing that.

          Yes...pretty shocking stuff.

          But...

Do you watch dolphins perform in shows?

          Have you swam with them?

If you have...you should watch this...and not do it ever again.

            Gawd....I love Dolphins!!

Those little goofs would put on a show for us when I was at Sea that would make your head spin. I'd be in the middle of something the US Navy considers safe and routine (that makes for very dramatic and apparently, highly-rated reality shows) and there would be the Dolphins making us all go "Awww...aren't they the best things EVER!?".

Those are the very same dolphins that get bought from those evil Japanese fisherman...and the ones not chosen are butchered in a horrible fashion.

That' why it's important for you to watch this documentary.

I also used to love watching them in shows...but I know now the evil truth...and this documentary exposes it all...it's truly horrible.

Japan also sells their meats at markets...but many are pushing to end its dolphin meat distribution...not only for humane purposes...but also because dolphin meat has the largest concentration of mercury...much higher than tuna, swordfish, shark, and other predatory animals.

Yep...and that is what makes my head spin about the whole thing.

I'm a farm boy who went to sea. I see dolphins (porpoises) right there with the dogs and horses I have known. Same level of wanting to please humans. Same level of, "This little **** is my friend!" except no one can have a big enough tank on the homestead, so they rely on the trip to Sea World, or whatever.

                      Get a dog.

No one would stand for this mistreatment of dogs and horses (although it happens). Man, dolphins have the exact same stuff that we value in dogs and horses, but they just can not be caged in the same fashion. Dogs and horses are what we call domesticated and the domestication does not threaten their existence. Dolphins need to be free. Domesticating them is cruel. There is a distinction.
