Shouldn't this film be set in Japan with a Japanese instructor?

Last time I checked...Karate is a Japanese martial art.

Why isn't this movie called Kung Fu Kid?

Just as well Jackie Chan has broad shoulders...cause he'll be carrying this movie.

Hahahaha! That was hilariously terrible in every way!

Yeah - It makes NO sense - Daniel's bond to Miyagi works because Daniel and Miyagi are BOTH outsiders. That's like, the main theme of the movie. They probably spend more time on that idea than on Karate in the original.

The ubra-American Cobra Kahn trainer guy was a Nam vet so there's an interesting contradictions about East/West worth examining right there - but the REALLY interesting thing is how displaced Miyagi is. He's obviously faced a lot of adversity and racism living in America, his wife died in an internment camp while he was fighting for the US during WWII. So he's emotionally displaced from both countries - but interestingly two things he loves most are bonsai trees and classic American cars. That stuff isn't just there to look pretty, it's there for an important reason.

It's the WHOLE REASON his relationship is so affecting to him and us - taking Daniel on as a son gives him a home and makes him American. It's actually brilliant scriptwriting. Making Daniel an outsider in a foreign country makes NO sense!

Ah - well I just found this on Wikipedia, so maybe the Chinese/Karate thing isn't too crazy, I really don't know about martial arts at all:

"...Miyagi refers to his style of karate as Miyagi-do karate. In the second film, Mr. Miyagi explains that the founder of his family's style learned his skills in China..."

Karate literally "means from the hand".

Jackie Chan is now old enough to be Mr. Miyagi. I'm getting depressed already. The thing about Daniel in the original series is that he is never an aggressor. He fights "for defense only". I don't get that feeling from the new trailer. Why didn't they name it "The Kung Fu Kid" ? That's a good point...

why remake Karate kid at all??? it was cool for it's time, and still holds up today even if dated a bit.

Jackie Chan is awesome, but I kind of see this role as him lowering himself. Sure he'll prob. fit being a karate teacher, but it would have been so much better if they went with more of a Karate kid kind of feel of a movie, rather than a full out remake.
