I haven't seen that version yet. I remember seeing it when it came out on Video. All of Luc Besson's Movies are great. Haven't seen a bad one yet:

La Femme Nikita (Point Of No Return was the American Re-Make)
    The Professional
    Fifth Element
    The Transporter
"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
    The beauty that surrounds them
    Isn't it a pity".

    - "Isn't It A Pity"

I'm a fan of Luc Besson too, and LEON is one of my favourites. Gary Oldman is particularly good in it.

even as a kid there you can see the acting chops natalie Portman has in this film (albeit their relationship is bordering on extra creepy)

well actually Matilda was written for someone older, but Portman did such a good job with it that they cast her instead.

I saw this first on the USA network and loved it. Shortly thereafter the longer version came out on Japanese laserdisc (for over 100 smackers), then not too long after that the region 2 dvd was released and the pic on it still looks amazing

2 Movies I didn't even know he did and haven't seen yet but have definitely heard of:

                      Taken
                      Kiss Of The Dragon

As I was looking at his bio...He was married to 2 stars from 2 of his movies. Anne Parllaud (Nikita) and Mila (Fifth Element) Had a kid with Parllaud and was only married to Mila for 2 years...Man, I gotta learn how to direct movies...MILA...he was married to MILA

I remember picking up a prerecord VHS of the longer version in Japan around 11 years ago and being pretty happy with myself (the laserdisc cost four times more money, too spendy for me!).

Two of his earlier films, SUBWAY and THE BIG BLUE are quite good as well. The one film of his that I didn't like was THE MESSENGER. First act was pretty good, but after that I found it really hard to sit through. He's produced (not directed) a buttload of films, including the mentioned KISS OF THE DRAGON and THE TRANSPORTER. They vary widely in quality, some are good, some not so much....

I never grow tired of watching this movie. Great performances all-around. You can help but love Reno (even though he's a killer). Finally a kid that can act! And Oldman who's really and truly crazy...
                          The longer cut is terrific.
You know: as Reno trained Portman as a hitman (hitwoman), why not make a sequel: La Professionelle?
And be sure to include a potted plant....
