        This is nuts, completely nuts.
But if they're gonna have a list I'm surprised "Cop Killer' by Bodycount isn't on it

I can't confirm 100% whether or not Clear Channel really did ban these songs (although it sure did seem like it from listening to the radio back then), but I can confirm 100% that the list did exist in 2001. I clearly remember thinking how stupid it was at the time...and I still think it was a stupid idea.

"Fire and Rain" would have been on there because of the line 'Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground' (even though it was a reference to his old band, The Flying Machine and not to an airplane crash as the urban legend would have us believe)

"Walk Like an Egyptian" would have been on there because of the reference to Egyptians and the suggestion that we walk like them.

"What a Wonderful World" was clearly on there because the idiot who made the list just didn't like the song and thought he could sneak it on the list and never have to hear it again.

Cop Killer wasn't on any of their playlists anyway. From what I understand, the songs on the 2001 banned list were songs that had been on Clear Channel's playlist prior to 9/11.

My best bud from high school is the Regional Network Administrator for Clear Channel here in Ohio. I will drop him an EMail and see what he has to say.

I don't think they were banned; but I remember hearing it was sent to affiliates as "suggestions."

It always bothered me that nothing from "Operation: Mindcrime" was on the list. (The WHOLE ALBUM is about a religiously motivated assassin hunting down the enemies of his boss.)

Yeah, but I don't think anyone at Clear Channel had a clue what Mindcrime was about. They put songs on there that didn't really relate to anything just because they had the word 'airplane' in there somewhere. I don't think they were putting any thought into things. Like I said before: stupid idea.

I distinctly remember a few weeks or so after 9/11 I was listening to WRVV here in PA, which was at the time a Clear Channel station, and during the all-request lunch, the DJ mentioned someone had requested REM's "Its the end of the world as we know it" but that he couldn't play it. So I believe this is true and was followed to some extent at least.
