    Huge rattlesnake!

I have in the past hour come in contact with a BIG rattlesnake 4 1/2-5' long . It was in the road and it was the first time I have ever seen one (alive) in Florida. One of my co-workers (who is crazy I might add) did a Steve Irwin and caught the darn thing to re-locate it.

I am sure I will be having nightmares tonight now!?

    Anyone ever run into any?

I saw one while hiking in Texas once, but it was a good 25 yards away--which coincidentally was not far enough for my comfort.

That is a fair sized snake, but no record breaker. I think those Eastern Diamondbacks get much bigger, like as much as 8ft.

I used to hear some rattling once in a while when I hiked down in the Niagara gorge, but I never actually saw one down there.

Iv'e seen a few. I killed one about 5 years ago and cooked him up. He was a bit stringy but delicious! I still have his rattle in my garage.

I have also eaten one but not seen one alive.

Actually pretty good eating...meat tasted kind of sweet to me and the only issue was picking through the small bones.

We have copperheads and some type of rattlesnake here in Maryland that I think are the only known poisonous snakes indiginous to this area. I have seen plenty of copperheads in wooded areas and just steer clear of them. They don't seem to be aggressive and it really isn't typical to see one anyway.

I've seen a couple when I've been in eastern oregon. Never got too close to one, but when I use to go hunting in that area, I carried snake shot shells in my 9mm just in case.

I've wanted to try to eat one but haven't had the chance to yet. I hear they're really good.

Yes, but only once. I almost walked right up to him before I knew he was there. He hadn't even started the rattle, so either he didn't know I was there or he didn't see me as a threat.

Copperheads and Water Moccasins, however, were all over my neighborhood growing up...and they don't warn you with a rattle! The guy who lived next door to me when I was growing up was bit by a copperhead and it almost killed him.

I am an avid mountain biker and have run over a few with my bike. Not on purpose. They look like tree branches on the trail until you run over them at 20 miles an hour. I was also walking my bike up a steep hill one time and heard one rattling and watched it take off up the mountain like a bullet. Those suckers are FAST!
