U.S. Gets Decent Draw For World Cup

We're in Group C with England, Algeria and Slovenia. First match will tough against the English side, but I think the Americans stand well against Algeria and Slovenia. Slovenia will be tougher as they dispatched Russia, but I think the U.S. can do well. The again, talk to me after group play

Hector, I see Mexico lucked out and got in South Africa's group, but... they got France and Henry's magic hand.

I think the toughest group will be G- Brazil, Portugal, Ivory Coast and North Korea.

It looks like all of the Groups seem somewhat evenly spread out. There is usually a group of death and I don't see one at first blush.

I believe the U.S. lost to England 2-nil in 2008 which was the last time they played. USA is playing much bettter soccer but I believe England is too. If they both bring their "A" games it should be a good match. Theoretically, the U.S. should be able to beat Slovenia and Algeria but I don't ever get over confident. I have watched the U.S. play some horrible soccer even over the last year.

Just out of curiousity, will Beckham be on the English squad for one final run at the cup? I don't think he is a starter but will probably get some playing time.

I think Bekham will be on the side, but see limited playing time, if any. I think he's more of a situational player at this point in his career.

I agree about the groups being spread out, but I do think Group G looks a bit tough. Don't undersestimate Ivory Coast.

You have a good chance against Slovenia and Algeria, but don't hold your breath against England

If America play like they can then i think they will go through with England from this group.

Group G is definatly the group of death.

Well, I figured if the USA can beat Spain (and Spain did have their "A" squad) fielded in the Confederation Cup, then they have the capability of beating anyone.

I still think Brazil is the #1 team in the world even though they are ranked #2 and I still find it a little unbelievable that France and Argentina are ranked #7 and #8 respectively. Don't get me wrong, they are both good teams but both of them just squeaked in to the World Cup and were getting their rear ends handed to them over and over again by weak opponents. I realize that the U.S. still needs to prove themselves despite their unbelievable performance in the Confederation Cup but they definitely should be in the top 10. I realize the CONCACAF is a weak region but doesn't beating Italy and Spain's "A" squad and nearly beating Brazil mean anything?

Oops...I forgot that the U.S. did get spanked by Italy in the Confederation Cup but turned around and crushed Egypt who beat Italy.

Do you realise we have to keep this thread going for 6 months before the match actually takes place.

Hey, now that someone finally started a soccer thread we'd better keep it going to bury these weekly football threads

Won't happen. All of the big college bowl games are coming up. You'll have to wait until either January or February.
