R.I.P. Dolly Parton

Legendary singer-songwriter and country music icon Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80.

Her nephew revealed the news in an Aug. 25 Instagram video.

After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones.

My family would vacation at Dollywood so we saw her several times within my lifetime. Hopefully whoever is in charge of Dolly's empire will continue to keep her charities going.

Dolly Parton was an icon.

Growing up, I remember a lot of "Dolly Parton jokes" about her figure. But in the end, her music, her business sense, and her amazing character proved to people that there was so much more to her than her cup size.

She never forgot where she came from, she never slowed down, and she was a champion for the rural poor and for marginalized communities. She was a great musician and a prolific songwriter, but I think she was an even more impressive human being. The world needs more people like Dolly... earnest, compassionate, and doing their part to make the world a little bit better than they found it.
