Hazzard County Cooter R.I.P.

Ben Jones a.k.a. mechanic Cooter Davenport of Hazzard County has died at the age of 84 of a massive heart attack at home Sunday.
Jones was also a business owner and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1989 to 1993 when he lived in Georgia.

While on a tour of the US Capitol building in the summer of 1992, he walked by and was pointed out to all of us, without mentioning his former acting career. On that same tour, a story was told about Fred Grandy, then also a Congressman (from Iowa), i.e. Gopher from The Love Boat.

When I heard the news that this man had died, my first thought was of that day and how, at the time, I thought to myself as a 22 year-old young adult, that many people with a lot of substance end up doing jobs in life, especially TV acting jobs back then, that are so superficial and 'beneath them.' But then in that same moment I also thought to myself, these two guys would never be in Congress if it weren't for The Dukes of Hazzard and The Love Boat.
