THE GREAT SMOKEY ROADBLOCK (1977)—originally released as The Last of the Cowboys—is a quintessential 70s trucker comedy directed by John Leone. The film stars a legendary Henry Fonda as Elegant John, an aging, terminally ill truck driver whose beloved rig is repossessed while he’s in the hospital. Refusing to fade away quietly, John steals his truck back for one final, glorious cross-country run.
Along the highway, he picks up a wildly eccentric group of hitchhikers, including a madam (Eileen Brennan) and her working girls (featuring a young Susan Sarandon), sparking a massive, multi-state police chase. Riding high on the CB radio craze of the era, the picture is a chaotic, surprisingly touching swan song for the American outlaw driver, even featuring early supporting work from future horror icon Robert Englund.
