i always felt that he was a genuinely kind and good person. traits that did not suit him well in politics, but he did a tremendous amount of good in the world and led by example. now he is with his wife again. RIPComment

I got to meet the Carter's, and they are truly a great and decent couple.
My Great Aunt & Uncle used to work with habitat for humanity and would have to attend yearly meetings. Since they lived in N.C. they would drive down to Geogia for a meet-and-greet, take photos and business stuff. Over the years they got to where the travel got too hard on them, and I was asked to be there driver. The first time I went I was told that as a visitor I could get a picture but do not speak. I just hung back but the staff would look at me and whisper bodyguard. I was 6'2" tall sorta musclar, shaved head, so I fit the bill.
Over the years I would make this trip, always staying in the background. Finally, one trip Mr. Carter waved me over. He shook my hand and pulled me aside. He said he appreciated the fact that I would give up the time to take care of my family. The one part that stuck with me was the fact that he told me Jesus never said anything bad about gay people and that I should not be ashamed. I often wear some type of rainbow necklace and the fact that he noticed surprised me. This was a quick conversation that meant more to me than anybody else I have meet.
I did this for decades, making the long trip (Texas to N.C. to Georgia and back again). spending time with my family and getting to witness history watching the Carters doing that meet-and-greet in action.Visit my wiki site:
