YES vs RUSH -- Monday question

I'd have no problem whatsoever listening to Queen for 24 hours

I like Queen, but I couldn't listen to them for too long in one stretch... Freddie has a great voice but it get's annoying after a while

Now that I'm officially in my late 30s, I guess I've become "that guy" and listen to Yes constantly. I hated them for ages and now... I get it!

One of my best friends is in a Genesis tribute band (Gabble Ratchet)... I actually prefer them to the real Genesis..

as for Rush, they make me smile and that covers record they did a few years ago is fantastic, but i wouldn't say i'm a super fan.

Not only is Rush one of the greatest all time rock bands...Neil Peart is one of the greatest drummers of all times...period...

Hector, Hulk, Megoapesnaut, Zemo, Nostalgiabuff, etc. may I compliment you on your exquisite taste?

If I have to be punished, I'll go with YES. If I've been good, then I wants me some (hell, a WHOLE LOT OF) Rush. My all-time favorite band, and every time I've seen 'em live then never fail to put on a great show. Band's always tight, and the audience gets this infectious good vibe running through it.

True story; When I was a student at the Joe Kubert School, my roommate used to listen to YES. Over and over again. Every. Single. Day. And if it wasn't YES, it was Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe. Or Anderson-Vangelis. Or any project featuring any member of YES past or present.

Over and over again. Every. Single. Day. I hear "Starship Troopers" one more time...

Needless to say, I'm not a big fan of YES. Talented? Oh sure, I'll grant you that, but listening to them over and over again would be hell on earth for me. The Cenobites in Hellraiser couldn't think of a worse torture. Hooks to my flesh? I scoff, SCOFF I say! Just don't play "Roundabout", please.

Glad to see there are people on here with good taste and open minds to good music.
Both bands are intellectually stimulating lyrically and musically.
Being a bass player and Rickenbacker fan, both band have some of the best bass players and Rickenbackers players of all time.
Geddy Lee certainly adds complexities to his playing while at the same time playing bass notes on the Moog via Tauras pedals and playing away on the Matrix 12 synth during his middle eight on some of the tracks. Plus he sported a Rickenbacker 4003 during the Moving Pictures era that added that growl we are all familiar with.
Chris Squire is certainly amazing and adds mid range tonalities to help the lead guitar at times. He too sports a 4003 Rickenbacker that also incorporates that bass growl. Just listen to the opening notes on "Roundabout"

Given a choice I would have to go with Rush and I could listen to Moving Pictures all day, which I did back in my college days. "Red Barchetta" is one amazing song. Musically and lyrically. Not to mention "YYZ" and "Limelight". Pert's drumming is second to none and his lyrics certainly help mold a very intriguing story line to tale.

Had the same thing happen with Rush. When I was at the U, BOTH these bands were what the hip young hipsters all listened to. Over and over. So I'm kinda sick of BOTH of them. (A sentiment I guess a few people share; hence this thread.)

I never got that. I found Rush to be kinda wishy-washy lyricly, and Yes tried way too hard to be trippy.

Amen, another Red Barchetta fan. If that isn't the best song both musically and lyrically, in the history of the universe, then I will donate all my Megos to charity! I recently purchased Rock Band 2 just so I could jam along with it.

Not to defend the band or anything (if you don't like 'em, that's fine), but just for the record, Jon Anderson wasn't 'trying' to be trippy, he honestly doesn't have a choice. That's just how he is.
