    Economy?

Apparently the economy isn't affecting all aspects of vintage toy collecting. Although Mego's seem to be in the tank. (except for Greg's auctions)

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=350278095278

I've watched these and just 4 years ago you could snag one for $65-$75. I've been waiting for them to drop.

Could it possibly be that repros/reissues and customs have flip flopped the supply/demand ratio? Could be the economy but I see other areas pulling strong prices. Even the stuff on in the web in the Mego category hasn't been strong. Usually repro/reissue, Famous covers, dolls, etc, but not too many nice Megos.

I don't think so. I've seen Megos and many coimics still go for high prices. Like anything else there are more people cutting back/being careful with their money. I've lost a few comic auctions simply because I've held myself to a certain price I was willing to pay.
In the past I may have bid higher bit I'm trying hard to stick to a budget and I'm probably not the only one. In certain other segments of collecting values are so high a lot of the people in it are people who had no money worries to begin with.

i don't think megos (wgsh atlease) are that much cheaper than a couple years ago, if anything megos are doing pretty well considering this economy.

Yeah, although Megos whnt down A LOT from the early 2000s to the mid 2000s, they don't seem to have gone down in value as much recently. I think it has a lot to do with the repro market (CTVT in particular - just look at the prices of the original version of anything they've released today vs. before they were released by CTVT. I think those numbers speak for themselves).

I really think a lot of this "bad economy" thing is imagined. For 80-90% of people things are no different. Yeah, groceries are a little more expensive, but gas is much cheaper than at its height 1 or 2 years ago. I think the press makes people believe they are in tough times by constant bombardment. How many commercials, especially radio, start off with the phrase "In these troubled times...." or whatever. If you hear it enough you will start to believe it. We run a model kit company and 2009 has been our best year yet (out of the past 12) we can't keep up, and I expect awesome holiday sales in the next 4-5 weeks.

I am happy to hear your business is doing well. However it is bad out there if you are one of the many who have lost there job. I lost my job back in March and am still unemployed. So yeah , it is bad out there

I agree, and that number of 80-90% I think is way off. More then half the people I know have been affected one way or another buy these tough times

I totally agree with you on the CTVT stuff. They killed the value or decreased it immensly on the knights, pirates and 1999 stuff, and to be frank, the CTVT versions completely suck. The Mego figures are 30 years older and will be around for at least 30 years longer. Those repros have already started to break down and they're like 5 years old.

DM Andorian, Romulan and Mugato really did a number on the Mego versions of those figures (not to mention the common ones). But I cannot say the quality is bad there, it isn't. It just hurt the value of the real ones. What more can I say. Perhaps one day that will change.

The economy may have something to do with the market but the flood of re-issues has really done allot. New collectors don't even know what's what, so why bother. oh well.

                              It's pretty bad.

Even though our household income will be higher than it ever has been this year; we are still cautious.

We have cut back a lot on discretionary spending like eating out, travelling, etc.

I do think people are allowing themselves a treat here and there which is why some parts of the collectible market are good but just being more choosy with what they buy.
