People had no problem with corporate Disney sucking the life out the character over the years but returning Mickey to his roots is offensive. I just don't get it.

I never like the idea of revamping but few remember that the early Mickey Mouse was a bit different in look and behavior.

But I just can't help but think of the South Park episode about the Jonas Bros. Mickey Mouse is in there as head of Disney and hilariously evil.

The Mickey of the early shorts & comic books/strips was a tough little fighter and I'd be glad to see that Mickey return. The Mickey that took on the Phantom Blot. See some of the earlier Dell Four-Color comics and the Floyd Gottfredsson daily strips of the 30s...good stuff up until around mid-50s when he became more involved in more ordinary crimes for Chief O' Hara.

Disney attempted to recapture some of that in the early 80s Mickey Mouse Adsventures comic book but had never really attempted to translate it too much into TV & Movies.

I think Mickey is a character who can play to different ages in different ways, similar to how Donald Duck can be both the Barks version and the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse version. I think Disney has realized that they can do other stuff with the characters and still keep the "iconic park" version out there as well.

What bothered me was the subtext of the article I posted; the things the execs were thinking, how they were looking at the character. Which SHOULDN'T bother me.... 'cos it's not really a surprise.... but it does.

The NY Times article is a bit sensationalized. What they are going to do is, if the Epic Mickey game is a success they will carry over the design of Mickey from that into other areas, like animation, TV and merchandising. You really don't get much more classic Mickey than the Epic Mickey design because it's not even a new design. They are going back to the pre-Fantasia design complete with tail.

The game didn't bother me; mostly 'cos I think you're right, they're returning him to the more generic action/comedy type he was back in the 60's and 70's. HAW! I think the PRECEEDING Loony-Tunes reboot.... the TunesBabies one.... makes a MUCH better meter stick of poo than Loonatics. Loonatics was just unforgettable, the other one had critics lamenting the LACK of violence in a kids show.

He is not "being put through a blender, frappeed, poured into a new mold." He is just being changed back to what he was. He is not going to be mean or evil. Just more mischievous and adventurous like he used to be. This is old school classic Mickey.

I really don't know how to be any more clearer on this. Check the link I posted, do some research on the game or better yet watch some early Walt Disney shorts before getting up and arms over what is really a non-issue.

I agree that he needs a bit of revamping, but not for it's own sake.

Well, since SOME kids have no taste, nor any idea as to what Mickey is really like, they probably will.

I fully expect their parents to have a group French Fit, and start writing protest emails to the dorks in charge of this.

Exactly! Thank you! Over the years corporate Disney have taken away his spunk and spirit. Now they're giving it back to him. This is old school scrapper Mickey off on an adventure.

I love the classic Disney cartoons and characters and I would be the first to complain if I thought the new game was disrespectful to Mickey in any way. He is not really being changed or re-imagined. The traits he originally had, which were taken away to make him a mild corporate mascot instead of an adventuring cartoon character, are just being given back to him.

This is not Grand Theft Mickey or Call of Duty Mickey. It's going to be an E rated action platformer.
