Hulk Hogan just admitted on Larry King that in his Hogan's Knows Best reality show...his entire family would "exaggerate" everything due to the presence of the cameras.

Is reality TV scripted?

BTW American Chopper sucks now...I used to like that show.
But now since senior and junior are no longer working together...the show now focuses half its time on senior...and the other half on junior...which equates to BORING television.
The whole point of the show was them two arguing...well...since that factor is gone...the show sucks now.
I mean...who cares about senior building a bike with a bunch of employees who would not in a million years...raise their voices at him...building a bike without conflict...BORING.
The same applies to junior. Does anybody care about his new company...and his endeavor of building a boutique with his store-bought girlfriend?
Or Mikey taking up drawing and painting?
No...of course not.sigpicComment

The Showing of What "they" want you to see is very scripted imo.., It seems like the Producer's & Editor's Feed off of certain types of Personalities to the Degree, that, THAT is the Only character Action of a Certain Person that they want you to see ....
I'm sure the Basic Direction is set up .... Like on Hell's Kitchen..., I am sure the Director say's " Ok,.. now this Dude's gonna come in Here, & Eat your Arse, so make sure it works !!! "
Russel on Survivor , "Ok ,.. Now we want you to talk Crap about someone " ...
But then stuff like the Other Russel passing out ,.. Probably not so , much, however they knew what happened after the fact,.. so they built the show up around Him,.. & then showed what happened to him at the end..
Any Celebrity Reality show star is all acting imo... As far as that's not really them..., that's who they want to be, or who they want you to see..., Maybe Not Ozzy though..., I don't think he even know's what Acting is.... The Original Knight ..., Often Imitated, However Never Duplicated. The 1st Knight in Customs.

A friend of mine has worked on several elimination contest type reality shows. The shows she worked on were casted for certain traits - basically these traits are cliches by now - a tough guy, a nicer guy, a sneaky chick, a goofy chick etc. They all fit some kind of mold.
The performers are mostly aspiring actors, they're people who really want to stand out and perform. While the shows are not scripted down to the word, there are basic outlines and the producers often direct the cast members in certain directions.
So the ones she worked on weren't scripted exactly, but they were planned out to a large degree.Comment

Televison has went this route lately in a lot of shows.
Not only hour dramas, but also documentaries and reality shows.
Mythbusters is a great example.
You have to watch through 35 minutes up crap to see what Jamie and Adam are up too.
I was just watching a Bigfoot documentary the other day.
I was really into it - then they broke away for 15 minutes on another related story.
It pizzed me off bigtime have to wait to see the conclusion of the segment I was interested in.
It's a TV trend that's really annoying.
It's like all shows do it now.Comment

FWIW, a friend of mine is a camerman and has worked on a few reality shows. He said that yes indeed they are loosely scripted, also directed and they often do multiple takes of the same scene!
Although, I believe that it varies from show to show how much directorial interference there actually is....Comment

>None of them were "pretty"
....give it a season or two.
>his entire family would "exaggerate" everything due to the presence of the cameras.
There's a name for that.... a psychological effect wherein people who KNOW they're being observed don't act normally, they act how they THINK they should act.
>The shows she worked on were casted for certain traits - basically these traits are cliches by now
There's an awesome episode of "Mission Hill" about that....
>I'm not entertained by the conflict and dissent.
That was always my problem too; that they're (supposedly) selling the suffering of real people as entertainment.

I know a couple of people who were on some well known reality shows on VH1, and they told me that a huge amount of what went on was scripted and planned out. Not that it surprised me one bit anyhow.Comment

I'm sure they are all scripted to some extent. Maybe not word for word but probably just putting thoughts in their head such as "it would make great television if you did x"
As already pointed out a lot of aspiring actors and others who crave attention so they really don't need any scripting. I'm sure some of the heated arguments you see on Survivor for example are very real and not just some made up drama.
Sometimes they have those shows after the reality show in which they bring back the cast members and some of them genuinely seem peeved off at others on the show and not just yucking it up for the cameras."The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith."
