how well do usb external modems work?

We still have dial up ,yeah I know don't say it but its freakin cheap.Has anyone tried a USB external modem? I was looking at lab tops and most don't have a regular phone plug on them.Trying to steer you to high speed I guess.I found on line these on line and wondered how well they work.Any thoughts anyone.

I have a wireless USB modem, that I use when on the run.

As long as you have reception they are great.

In Fact I downloaded a big download, whilst tearing down the highway at 100km/hr. The connection never dropped out and the download went smooth.

Pain in the butt when you want to use it somewhere when the reception is dodgey though! Drops in and out/slow. . .etc. Just depends on the service provider and what their coverage is like though I guess.
