It seems like the fart joke has become the ultimate indicator of unfortunate, lowbrow comedy. My question is; why are they contemptible?

THIS is kinda unexpected. I was wondering, since in OTHER posts "it's all fart jokes" seems to be the biggest condemnation used against shows and movies the respondent detests.... and here you guys are DEFENDING the fart joke!

You're all doing it just to mess with me, aren't you? (FUN FACT: At this point I'd start a rant about "the strawberries," but I've only ever met one person who'd seen "The Caine Mutiny" and got the joke. And it's not the same online....)
