The surprisingly relevant humor from 1970's Johnny Carson

On the Reels channel (a channel that's supposed to be about movies, so go figure) they run Carson's Comedy Classics. It's a half hour compilation show of stuff from The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson made in the early 80's.

I've always loved Johnny so I watch it.

How weird is it to hear some of the jokes that seem quite contemporary these days. I mean, in what I saw Johnny does jokes about:

Swine Flu (there was an outbreak of it in the 1970's)
Roman Polanski (In the news again because he might be forced to come to the USA to face the music for what he did in the 1970's that Johnny was making jokes about)
The faltering economy and the clowns in Washington (lot of the jokes I heard in these shows would work just as well today)
Gas prices (Johnny was joking all the way through the price shocks on gas in the 1970's)

Being a huge fan of both George Carlin and Tom Lehrer I've noticed the phenomenon before. It's part of why I think we've been living the same 20 years over and over for a long time. Kinda sad to think that in all this time we really haven't gotten anywhere....
