Wow.
I'm not one to realize who wrote what, but this is the second time in just less than a week that Ellison's name popped up on my radar.
Had lunch with garagesale last Friday and he was talking about Harlan Ellison and relayed a pretty good story about the man. I guess he could sense my blank stare at the name and when he mentioned, "You know, the Dude that wrote City on the Edge of Forever....", I dinged in.
"If you put your hand in my pocket, you’ll drag back six inches of bloody stump."

I gotta say, that although that episode is one of the very best episodes of any Trek series, I always thought Ellison was a pompous blowhard. the guy just screams arrogance. I mean really, what else of note has he ever really done? and the episode filmed for City was apparently very different from what he wrote so who knows if it would have been any good.Comment

Well.... I've always seem him as poster-nerd for the old addage "better lucky than good." He's not a bad author; but there have been so many better that never got the same amount of recognition.

He's a good writer, no doubt about that.
Problem is: I think that no matter what kind of story your write, somebody somewhere will have written something similar before.
20 years ago, I wrote a story about a group of people who where abducted by a covert government group, to boost their "special powers".
In the finale, my hero, Max Piretti, who cannot control his powers, goes on overload, endangering the world.
You can imagine how much I loved Heroes....
And then again: I owed a debt to X-Men, so we all borrow/steal/pay hommage.....
