Was watching WKRP on DVD ... what a shame

Was just watching some season-1 WRKP's on DVD and it's such a shame what they did by cutting out all of the original music and either replacing it with generic muzak or just hacking out entire scenes.

Great stuff like this we'll never see again except for bad recordings on youtube

YouTube - **Rare** Pink Floyd on WKRP Cincinnati

This set (season 1) really sucks.
They should have not even bothered releasing it.
    Let it die in peace.

    Thanks for reading

Might also be why they haven't released any more seasons.

I actually bought the bootleg set which has all four seasons and is completely uncut.

The old acts want to much money for there songs to be on the DVD. Funny thing is they where probibly gratefull for there songs to be heard when the show was originaly aired. The show Roswell had the same problem but the effect was little where as WKRP the music was part of the back drop.

So did they use the music without permission to begin with?

They probibly had permission then but the contract didn't take in consideration videos of the show.
Like adding color to B&W films the creator may have hated it but there is nothing that can be done, Unless you where smart enough to think of what the future would bring and I only know of one guy who was that smart. Citizen Kane will never be colorized.

I read on a site here's how it worked ....

Since WKRP was video taped as opposed to filmed the rights were cheaper to obtain.

These right were leased for 10 years ...

So basically by the late 1980's the song rights all expired.

The rights owners usually don't bother a show for reruns (if they go over the limit) unless the owners really keep up on what's going on.

Releasing a show on DVD is a different story.

Hard for that to go under their radar.

We got it for 3 bucks at a used book store. I was trying to figure out what was off when we were watching it.

The deal with things like this is that when original music rights were negotiated, it was for TV only, not any kind of home video release. Back when WKRP was originally aired, such a release probably wouldn't have been remotely conceivable, so why have it in the contract? This has unfortuately happened with a lot of old TV shows, but is more noticiable in a show like WKRP, that had so many different pop music songs in their soundtrack from show to show.

This same kind of thing kept the animated HEAVY METAL movie from getting a home video release for many years. The original contracts with the bands who's songs were used just included theatrical and television distribution, not any kind of video release (and considering when the film was released, a bit after the dawn of video, that was kind of shortsighted). It took years for Columbia and the various bands to finally hammer out acceptable prices to make a new contract covering home video.
