Best Blu-Ray player? -PS3?

Soon i'm going Blu-Ray. What player should i buy? Some told me the PS3 is the best player out there? True?

Also does the PS3 play burned dvds?

If I were in the market for a Blu-Ray player, I'd definitely get a PS3. It costs a little more, but you can use it to browse the internet, stream audio and video from your computer and play games.

Don't know about the new units but the old ones played every thing. The new ones won't even play PS2 games.

I grew out of gaming when I was in college , so I would go with a standard Blu-ray.

Why would they remove the option to play PS2 games? I asked the guys at bestbuy, one said the new ones will play burned dvd's, the guy with him said "nope"! LOL.

Don't know about the new units but the old ones played every thing. The new ones won't even play PS2 games.

They also removed 2 USB ports and the memory card slots.

The PS3 is a great Blu-ray player. The only issue I have with it is that the fan on mine is a bit louder than I'd like, and it runs a bit hot. Of course, this depends on player to player, some people say that theirs are almost silent, but mine sure isn't. But I'm cursed with hellishly good hearing too. I still use it for games, but I ended up buying a stand alone Sony Blu-ray player for movies and happily, that one is dead silent. And both my stand alone and PS3 play burned DVDs with no problems (they've played Blu-ray BD-Rs that I've burned just fine too. Just have to make sure to encode them properly)

I'll vouche for the PS3. I've had NO problems in the last two years.

I saw $98 Blu-Ray players the other day. I'd just wait a couple months personally. They're about to become dirt cheap.

There will probably be some great deals between Black Friday and Christmas. Maybe I can pick up one for the bedroom.

Well, I am too cheap to buy the PS3 just for movies. I have darn near every other game system LOL

Last year, I jumped on BR right after HDDVD ceased to live. My first BR player was a Sony s250 (or was it s300?). Terrible, horrible, miserable load times. 10 minutes after you put the disc in the darn thing before you could even get to menus.

Returned it.

Tried the next model up, the s350 (i think). Same thing.

Shows like Rambo, even once the movie started, you couldn't get to any menus and it would lock up.

Shows like Predator look HORRIBLE (read any Google review). THey blame it on technology used to film it in the first place.

Patriot, Terminator 2....meh, an upconvert dvd looks just as good.

Gave up and returned the second player and got out of the game...too much $$ for trouble.

Just a month or two ago, Walmart was selling a Magnavox NB500MG9 for $98!! It is a re-brand of some off-brand, BUT it works...and works well. It's fast, and so far, all my discs work just fine. I can't explain it either...I checked firmware of all the players and they technically were the same.

But. Until they start giving BR movies the 5 Star treatment, people will not be happy. Older shows like Blade Runner and Wizard of Oz got that treatment. The original film was scanned at 4000dpi, color corrected, cleaned up...the works...and they look really nice. Not sure how Halloween turned out as nice as it did, but is is really nice.
Newer shows look cool. Iron Man and (OH MY GOODNESS) Night at the Museum almost looks 3D!!

So. Pick your shows carefully and if a PS3 is in your budget, you 'll get all the latest updates. I would like to have a player capable of BR-Live content, but I can wait....movies don't need to be video game-like for me.

Any player you get MUST MUST MUST be able to conect to the internet for updates. If you don't at some point you'll put a movie in and it won't play because you need a firmware update. If you can't attach to the internet you have to burn a update disc and it's a pain in the but.

Yep, as noelani says, it is very important to read reviews before buying Blu-ray discs. Transfers can vary widely. And the film's age has nothing to do with it. Some older films like CASABLANCA and WIZARD OF OZ look great, while some newer films look like crap. I've passed on a bunch of titles just because the reviews were bad (the most recent one I passed on was GLADIATOR, too bad because I love the film, but the BD transfer really wasn't done properly).

I disagree about the Sony S350 player though, I think it works great, only slightly longer loading times than the PS3 on some discs and I have yet to find one that doesn't play on it, everything I've thrown in it loads and plays great (I did all the updates, so that helps I'm sure). Picked it up for $199 CDN at Walmart, they were clearing them out to bring in the new models.
