    AEROS smokeless butts

    Hi Guys,
On the old boards one of our memebers recommended these to me and Yana to quit smoking. I can't remember who it was but I want to know some ore details about them before I buy some. If anyone else has ever tried these to quit I'd like to hear your story...especially whether or not they "really" feel like you are smoking a lit cigarette. It's time to quit these things soon, or at least try, because I am smoking like a chimney these days and it's gonna be cold outside again soon! I think if these really do feel like a real butt then they just might do the trick. Thanks!

My advice is that both of you must make your mind up, and then prepare yourselves for 1-2 weeks of miserable cravings. I chewed on straws and would literally stretch out a drinking straw to about 3 feet long. Don't drink alcohol for a few months, and if you don't buy cigarettes you can't smoke them.

As for how smokelss butts work I can't say. Everyone that I've ever known that quit did different things, but one thing they all had in common was that they simply made their mind up. I don't think there's any magic buttons to hit that make it easy, but you can find ways to help you cope until the cravings pass.

I have never been a smoker but both of my brothers did and both quit.

As already stated, there was no magic pill, patch, magnetic ear device, gum or anything else that worked.

What worked was giving themselves a reason to quit. For my one brother, he had his first child and decided that he owed it to his daughter to do the best he could for his body to ensure he lived a long life within his control. He did it cold turkey.

I asked him about it and he said the first couple of months were difficult. He still has cravings every once in a while even though he has stopped about 6 years ago but he said the one thing that kept him going whenever he had an urge was to picture his daughter in his mind whenever he had the craving and that was what worked for him.

        Good Luck.

I quit 8 months ago. I just up and quit cold turkey. No gum. No smokeless cigs. Nuthin. Like other's have mentioned--it's a mind thing. For me, I was convinced that the cigarettes I was smoking were literally going kill me right then and there. Not 20 or 30 years down the line, but NOW. Once I made that shift in my mind it was really easy to quit......

Haven't had too many cravings. Just every once in a while--really no big deal.

Good luck to you--you really should quit!

No, not starting another quit smoking thread MOA; just trying to find out more about the product itself as mentioned in the title of the thread. I wasn't asking for advice as to how to quit, as I was in that first thread on the old boards; but a specific question about the means by which I want to try. I can't remember who the member was is all. For whatever reason, I lost track of the original thread on the old boards and the subject of quitting came up this week about the smokeless butts we were supposed to try.
Thanks guys for your support but you did more than enough in the original thread back then to inspire me to revisit my bad habit now. I gotta' just keep trying to quit and I suspect these things may help me cut down immensly.

                    Lou:

That was me talking about Aeros. Here's my experience with them:

They are not quite like smoking, but once you get used to them (and if you can get the technique down), the vapor from these, when sucked into the lungs, is very similar to smokking. And you get a nice nicotine kick from them.

I still smoke cigars occasionally, just 'cause I like 'em, though, not because I need 'em. Aeros carry me nicely through any plane flight, movies, theatre productions, long hours in my smokefree office, driving. I actually enjoy 'em better than I liked cigarettes--and no coughing or comlaints from anyone.

Some may not like them. I've had friends who used 'em, liked 'em, but ultimately went back to smoking for one reason or another. I don't know if you could use 'em to quit anymore than you could use the patch to quit--but I think they help and I think they are a great substitute.

The principle behind them is "proven," at least the studies on the nic inhaler show positive possibilities. Aeros is really just a reasonably priced, non-prescription version of the inhaler that is much more enjoyable (these have some semblence of a cigarette-ish "flavor").

I do highly recommend you at least try them.

                    Best wishes!

                      Hey James!
Thanks for replying! I think these might work because I find myself smoking less for nicotene and more for perosnal habit...the hand to mouth habit. I think these may help quell that. Tell me, when you inhale these do you feel anything in your thoat or is it just like regular air through a straw per se. That feeling of the smoke going down is what I am hoping these will somewhat replicate. Kind of like how that Vicks nose inhaler provides a sensation of sorts and you can feel the vapor in your nostrils. Do these Aeros provide any kind of sensation like that or are they just like essentially sucking air through a straw. This was my main item of curiosity regarding these things and we never got to talk about this back then. If they do indeed provide some sort of "throat sensation" I think they may work for me. I've tried the patch several times but it just doesn't work for me as it's that oral fixation that needs to be satisfied to be successful. And these sound like they may do the trick.
                      Thanks again for replying!

Based on what was just posted, it doesn't look like this helps kick the habit at all.

It just takes you from one product to another but with the same addiction.

Wouldn't the cancer rate be just as high with the smokeless variety as a regular cigarette?

In answer to both Lou and Adam West: kinda yes/no.

The sensation is *somewhat* like smoking. Aeros makes a menthol (I tried it b/c they sent a pack by mistake), which is very "mentholly"... probably great if you're a menthol freak. The regulars have a taste that is somewhat like a regular cig. The sensation in your throat/lungs is similar, but not exactly the same. These things are strong, and the first "puff" will make you cough, so you have to kind of learn how to control the intake to best suit you. I take about 5 short puffs in deep, and on about the 6th, I feel it in my throat & lungs. I also get that little nic buzz after that.

Aeros is cool to me, mainly b/c they won't ever leave you with that miserable lung inflammation you get from oversmoking (like I used to do when I'd drive cross country or hang out in Frankfurt, Germany bars). The nic kick makes it worth it, and I like it.

The addiction/smoking cessation question is almost moot. These--and any other nic replacement items--keep you addicted to the same substance you *really* like in cigarettes. The big difference, and this is something the big pharm companies emphasize, is that patches/gum/inhalers/Aeros don't give you all the 18 million other things like cyanide/carbon monoxide/horse dung you get from cigarettes.

Despite popular misinterpretation, there's no significant cancer risk from NICOTINE itself. It's addictive (like caffeine); nic has been known to cause to vasoconstriction (leading to other problems, but not cancer). The Aeros site shows where tests have been done by Federal Trade Commission (which licenses the sale of the item) indicating that nic is all you git.

Aeros *may be* actually less dangerous than smoke, but *probably* no less addictive, and may actually help on that "hand-to-mouth" habit. It will almost surely break your cycle of smoke breaks at work, since you can do it indoors.

Anyhow, I hope this is helpful/reassuring to everyone who reads it.

Just out of curiousity, do they sell different levels of nicotine to help someone who might want to quit?

I thought the way the patch works for some people is that you slowly decrease the nicotine levels thus weaning yourself off of the physical addiction.

I know my dad quit using nicotine/tar filters (this was back in the 1970's or so when that was about all there was).

I can distinctly remember the day he finally quit. They had a progressive set of filters that would remove more and more of the nicotine/tar, etc as you moved through the set. He was on the last one and was outside working in our garden.

It fell out of his mouth, he couldn't find it and just sort said forget it, I'm done. Last time he ever smoked.

Well, no. The cancerous carcinogens and posions are in the smoke, not the nicotene. Nicotene is just a drug.
These things are strong, and the first "puff" will make you cough
Hey James! This convinces me. If they are strong enough to make me cough WITHOUT smoke...I'm sold! I'm going to order a pack and test 'em out over the morning coffee instead of a real cig.
