Didja ever Google your old neighborhood?

Missing my mom, I was waxing nostalgic today, and Googled my old neighborhood in NYC. I used to live on 158th St. between Amsterdam and Broadway. Almost NOTHING is as I remembered it. The only exceptions are:

    my building is still there
my school is still there, (even the old mural on the Broadway side, but that's all that's the same)
the toy store I remember is still there, but the gates were down, so I couldn't see in the windows
my old church is still there

The grocery stores, candy stores, pizza place, fruit market, Buster Brown shoes, news stand and other places I remember are long gone.

Have you ever done this? What's changed? What's still the same?

Do you mean Google Earth? Where you can zoom in on the area and view it? Or are you talking about something else?

I guess that's it. All I do is type in the address in the map section, and when it appears, there's a place for you to click to view the area.

I went on a 3 hour tour with my mom on google earth. She was showing me almost everything she used to go to, live by, etc back when she was young. She was also suprised at the amount of change (and in some rare cases lack of) that the areas have went through over the years.

I do that all the time. I miss the area I grew up in but its not the same anymore. All the Record stores, toy stores, department stores, Shopping centers, movie theatres, Pharmacies, convient stores, mom and pop video stores aren't there anymore and now im hearing due to our economy the malls that i though would be there forever are closing down . Theres all new stores and some of the old stores were torn down and replaced with "modern" stores. Sometimes you wish you could go back into a time machine just for a day back the the late 70's and 80's.

I use Google Earth to visit old neighborhoods whenever I get nostalgic. Plus I use it to look at my parents' house when I am really missing them. Or I just use it to check out the town I live in. Most everything is different than it was when I was a kid except for the Kmart on Oddie boulevard in Sparks Nevada. It's still in the same strip mall that it has been in since I was a kid. Only difference is that they got rid of all the windows on the front of the store and replaced them with brick wall. It became a Big K for about 10 years, but it's Kmart again now. Across the street from Kmart used to be Grand Central, but it became Gemco and later Target, but the last time I went back home to visit, the building had been torn down.

I did the Google Earth thing on Pacific Grove, CA. Was irritated that I couldn't go down my old street. It was weird, like I could drive all the way around the block, but I couldn't get up to my old house! Like one of those bad dreams or something.
