Class of 2011 - How They See The World

The Beloit College Mindset List describes some of the perspectives held by students entering college this fall. Most were born in 1989. I wish they had done this the year I entered university. I'd love to look back and see the sea change for my class. Here are a bunch I found interesting-

    1. What Berlin wall?

    4. They never "rolled down" a car window.

    9. Nelson Mandela has always been free and a force in South Africa.

    15. Russia has always had a multi-party political system.

    21. Eastern Airlines has never "earned their wings" in their lifetime.

    23. Wal-Mart has always been a larger retailer than Sears and has always employed more workers than GM.

    34. They were introduced to Jack Nicholson as "The Joker."

    35. Stadiums, rock tours and sporting events have always had corporate names.

    39. Fox has always been a major network.

    43. Being a latchkey kid has never been a big deal.

    51. China has always been more interested in making money than in reeducation.

    52. Time has always worked with Warner.

    53. Tiananmen Square is a 2008 Olympics venue, not the scene of a massacre.

    55. MTV has never featured music videos.

    56. The space program has never really caught their attention except in disasters.

    61. They never saw Johnny Carson live on television.

    63. Avatars have nothing to do with Hindu deities.

    70. Food packaging has always included nutritional labeling.

I don't find it sad. People in their 60's would find it hard to believe that when I was a kid I wasn't into Buddy Holly or watch Leave it to Beaver or think Vietnam was much. Now as an adult I get it though. I think as our kids get older they will appreciate a lot of the things on the list.

all generations could make a list that the older generation would find sad and amazing but as txteach ahs said as we get older and they do they will apprteciate things more and see why they are important in some cases. mike

              Hey,
              Sigh.
Unfortunately, I think we have all graduated to "Old Fart" status.

I look at it this way; I'd rather be born in 1989 and miss out on all the obsolete technology of the past than die in 1989 and never see progress.

I hate to admit it, but yeah...I have. I'm only 38 which is nothing to me but my younger 20-something co-workers always say, "You're 38? You're old."

"I prefer to remain an enigma."

We've got an old Ma-Bell push button (wish it was rotary) Secretary phone in the office. Solid as heck and with that rubber shoulder rest attachment it's the most comfortable phone in the world. But I miss redial. Redial was a real advance!
