Do You Cook? Yeah, I Didn't Either!

    Wottup, fellow Mego-heads?

I have been inspired, recently, by our own Paul Clare (MegoHulk), a veritable Gas-Grill Master... I want to be like him.

I just created a new Web site called "A Reason to Cook." The entire time I worked on my book, Mego 8" Super-Heroes: World's Greatest Toys!, I don't think I ever cooked my own dinner. Sadly, that's FOUR YEARS we're talking about!

As a single dude, I didn't feel any need to cook... I didn't want to waste the time, and I didn't have the skills. The joke was on me, though, as eating out cost me in more ways than I care to share.

No longer single (woot!), I have A REASON TO COOK. So I built this Web site, for guys like me, who recognize their reason to cook. It's all about CHEAP, FAST and EASY. Hell, if it ain't all three, I'd rather hit TACO BELL®.

I launched the site tonight by posting an amazing recipe for something called White Bean Cassoulet, which takes less than 45 minutes to prepare! Please check it out and let me know what you think.

    A REASON TO COOK

If you dig my vibe, or if you have a recipe to share, I'd love to hear from you! I'm stoked up and ready to accept all cooking challenges!

I am now on the hunt for new recipes/challenges, so bring it on, baby. As my fiancee, Chelsea, is a Vegetarian (not Vegan, thankfullly), I am particularly interested in Veggie fare... but trust me: I will cook the Hell out of a Pig!

Shucks, B! I really hope you'll submit some shtuff, and/or stop by our house to enjoy a grill-out and a few beers! Heck, you can even pick up the sweet, MIB Mego WGSH (not to mention MIB POPY figures) I have waiting for you!

Not to repeat myself, but I am ON THE HUNT for clever (read: Cheap, Fast & Easy) recipes that will help us Manly-Men take care of ourselves (and/or super Hot Women in our lives)!

                Hey Ben,

As a result of my mom's cancer, she is now on a totally organic, veggie diet. I've had to come up w/ interesting ways to make otherwise bland food taste interesting. I can now make a meatless, oiless gravy, a pretty good pasta sauce, and a mean gucamole, and I'm still experimenting. And the funny thing is, I HATE COOKING! But I love my mom.

                      I can cook and grill.

Right now I'm mastering the technique of Asado Argentino (and Uruguayan).

I've been cooking since I was in my teens.

Mexican is my specialty...but I also love to grill and BBQ.

I can also make pizza from scratch...working on a few crusts and sauces right now.

Oh...and my double-dip Louisiana fried chicken is awesome...yum.

                      I also bake a little...but I'm not too enamored with baking...lol.

I also mingle with sea food.

Yes...I will definitely die of a heart attack soon enough...lol...

                      Your website looks good.

Are you taking any recipes with pictures?

I assume you want something more than... open box, remove pouch, struggle opening pouch for 15 minutes, remove pop-tarts...eat and enjoy. (Notice I skipped the "put in toaster" steps entirely as I'm no longer allowed to play with heat producing appliances).

My personal "quick and easy menu?"

It takes just a little prep:
                              1. Peel some potatoes, and cut them up in half inch slices.
                              2. Clean some vegetables, like carrots or a leak. Cut them up.
                              3. Some kind of meat, like spare ribs, sausages, etc.

                              What to do?
                              1. take a large glass bowl that can go in the oven.
                              2. put some olive oil in the bowl, to grease it up.
                              3. first (bottom) layer: potatoes.
                              4. Second layer: vegetables.
                              5. third layer (on top): meat.

You can season each layer to your liking, but usually some black pepper will be enough.
Pour some more olive oil over the top (not too much), so it drizzles down your layers.
Pour some water in the bowl, so your food doesn't get too dry (and burns).

Put the lid on, and put it in the oven for like 45 minutes.
You can "look in" on your bowl then, to check its progress, see if the water hasn't evaporated completely.
Take off the lid, and prick at the potato layer: if the potato slightly breaks apart, you're OK. You should be able to pierce the potato with a fork, without forcing in through (too hard), and without the potato falling apart like mush (too soft).

If it's all black and the fire alarm goes off, you probably waited too long. Go for take-out that evening., call the fire department first, though.....

The heat will make sure all flavours intermix, and your potatoes and vegetables will get the "gravy" from the meat. Add a sauce to your liking.

If you make a big bowl, you'll have food for several days.
If you normally eat 7 triple cheeseburgers in one go, you might not.

Next day, just reheat the left-overs!
                              .
                              .
                              .
"When things are at their darkest, it's a brave man that can kick back and party."
